Chapter 17 - The Network Falls

Derek’s arrest broke the structure.
Caleb cooperated.
Hall cooperated.
Voss tried not to.
Federal prosecutors froze Aurora’s accounts.
Search warrants hit laboratories in three states.
Illegal collections were seized.
Venom stockpiles recovered.
Research files secured.
Project Zero shut down.
Walter Pike testified.
His statement connected every major piece.
Rainier.
Derek.
Hall.
Voss.
Aurora.
The port.
The florist shipments.
The park.
The compromised safe house.
The sniper.
The museum.
For the first time, the whole story existed in one coherent line.
No mystery boss appearing from nowhere.
No separate conspiracy.
One network.
Different motivations.
Derek wanted revenge and control.
Voss wanted illegal research material.
Hall wanted money and protection.
Walter wanted out.
And Titan?
Titan wanted nothing.
That was why he became the center.
He could not be bribed.
Threatened.
Promoted.
Bought.
He noticed scent.
Movement.
Fear.
He reacted.
That simplicity destroyed a system built on people choosing not to see.
Titan officially retired two weeks later.
This time, I signed the paperwork immediately.
One dollar transferred ownership from the department to me.
Ramirez handed me the receipt.
“Expensive.”
I looked at Titan.
“Worst financial decision of my life.”
Titan stole a sandwich from Ramirez’s desk thirty seconds later.
“See?”
Retirement ceremony scheduled for spring.
Sophie insisted on attending.
So did Noah.
So did half the city.
But before any ceremony, we needed healing.
Titan’s shoulder remained weak.
My family slept badly.
Sophie started therapy.
Rachel stopped apologizing for not being closer to her daughter in the park.
Walter entered protection.
Maya visited Titan every few days.
Not medically necessary.
She claimed she was checking recovery.
Titan knew she brought treats.
One evening, Noah sat beside me on the porch.
Titan slept between us.
“Dad.”
“Yeah?”
“Were you scared?”
“When?”
“The whole time.”
I laughed softly.
“Yes.”
“You didn’t look scared.”
“That’s because I’m very talented.”
He rolled his eyes.
Then became serious.
“Was Titan scared?”
I looked down.
His ears twitched in sleep.
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
“I know him.”
“Then why did he keep going?”
I thought of Sophie beneath him.
The sniper shot.
The cobra.
The tunnels.
The museum.
“Because courage isn’t not being scared.”
Noah nodded.
“Yeah.”
I looked at him.
“You already knew that?”
“Pretty much.”
Teenagers.
