Chapter 13 - THE FALL OF EVELYN BENNETT

Evelyn Bennett was arrested on a rainy Thursday morning.

The charges initially related to alleged obstruction, witness intimidation, and conduct supported by the evidence investigators had developed.

Additional allegations remained under investigation.

News cameras recorded her walking toward an unmarked vehicle.

She wore a dark coat and sunglasses.

Even then, she maintained the same expression I'd seen in Emily's hospital room.

Disbelief.

Not fear.

Not remorse.

Disbelief that someone had finally challenged her.

Jason was arrested separately in connection with allegations arising from Emily's assault and confinement.

Derek also faced scrutiny over his alleged role in pressuring Emily and handling disputed documents.

Their attorneys denied wrongdoing.

The family businesses issued statements distancing themselves from the investigation.

Investors demanded answers.

Business partners suspended contracts.

And employees who had remained silent began contacting investigators.

Some offered financial records.

Others described threats.

A few admitted they had helped conceal misconduct because they feared losing their jobs.

The Bennett name, once spoken with admiration in Charlotte's wealthiest circles, became associated with an expanding criminal investigation.

But I took no pleasure in the headlines.

Because Emily was still waking from nightmares.

She still startled when someone knocked unexpectedly.

She still checked door locks twice before sleeping.

And she still apologized for things that were not her fault.

Justice in a courtroom would matter.

But it would not instantly erase what she'd experienced.

One evening, I found her sitting on the porch of the temporary home where she was staying.

She was wrapped in a blanket, watching the sunset.

I sat beside her.

“Penny for your thoughts?”

She smiled faintly.

“I was thinking about the wedding.”

I waited.

“Everyone looked so happy.”

I nodded.

“You looked happy too.”

“I was.”

She stared at the trees.

“Do you think any of it was real?”

I considered the question carefully.

“I think your feelings were real.”

She looked at me.

“And his?”

“I can't tell you what he felt.”

I paused.

“But whatever he felt, it didn't excuse what he did.”

Emily nodded slowly.

For a while, we sat in silence.

Then she asked:

“Mom, what happens if Claire is dead?”

I looked toward the darkening sky.

“Then her family deserves answers.”

“And if she's alive?”

“Then she deserves the chance to come home.”

Emily wiped her eyes.

“I hope she's alive.”

“So do I.”

My phone rang.

Detective Mercer.

I answered immediately.

“Thomas?”

His voice was strained.

“Colonel, we've identified a new lead.”

“What kind?”

“A woman in another state.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who?”

“We're still verifying her identity.”

“Thomas.”

He hesitated.

May you like

Then said:

“She may be Claire Whitmore.”
