Chapter 12 - ELEANOR’S COUNTERATTACK

Eleanor’s lawyers changed strategy.

If they could not deny the balcony footage, they would attack context.

Lawrence Pike announced through another attorney that Eleanor had been under extreme emotional strain.

He claimed Sarah had threatened to remove Eleanor from her grandson’s life.

He claimed Daniel manipulated his father’s estate documents.

He claimed Graham Vale was lying to reduce his own sentence.

Then someone leaked Sarah’s private medical records.

Details of her pregnancy appeared online.

Her earlier miscarriage.

Her anxiety medication from years ago.

Private counseling notes.

Sarah stared at the article in horror.

“How did they get this?”

Daniel was furious.

Reed suspected Pike.

But proving the leak would take time.

The purpose was obvious.

Eleanor’s defense team wanted Sarah portrayed as unstable.

Sarah turned off the television.

“I’m not hiding.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t owe anyone an explanation.”

“No.”

“But if I say nothing, they fill the silence.”

Two days later Sarah issued a statement.

Not an interview.

Not a press conference.

A written statement.

She confirmed she had experienced a miscarriage three years earlier.

She confirmed she had received counseling afterward.

Then she wrote one sentence that spread everywhere.

SEEKING HELP AFTER LOSS DID NOT MAKE ME UNSTABLE.

IT MADE ME HUMAN.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THAT BALCONY IS ON VIDEO.

The attempt to discredit her backfired.

Hospital advocacy groups defended her privacy.

Medical organizations condemned the leak.

Public attention shifted toward whoever had released confidential records.

Then investigators discovered Pike’s firm had hired a private investigator who illegally purchased medical information.

Pike was arrested on charges unrelated to the attempted murder case.

His cooperation began less than twenty-four hours later.

Like Graham, Pike wanted to save himself.

He admitted hiding financial transfers.

He admitted destroying documents after Charles’s death.

He admitted helping Eleanor locate Mercer.

But he claimed Eleanor kept a final archive.

A complete record of accounts no one else could access.

“Where?” Reed asked.

Pike smiled tiredly.

“You know Eleanor.”

“She trusted buildings more than people.”

“The mansion?”

“No.”

Pike shook his head.

“The place nobody would ever search because everyone thinks she hates it.”

Arthur knew.

“The lake house.”

Pike nodded.

“Charles’s study.”

Police had already searched it.

But Pike gave them a detail.

“Look beneath the fireplace.”

They returned.

Behind a removable stone panel sat a fireproof safe.

Inside were ledgers.

Passports.

Cash.

Encrypted drives.

And dozens of envelopes labeled with names.

Employees.

Politicians.

Business partners.

Friends.

Family.

Sarah’s envelope contained photographs of her before she married Daniel.

Employment history.

Medical information.

Family debts.

Every vulnerability Eleanor could find.

Daniel’s envelope was thicker.

School incidents.

Relationships.

Private emails.

Psychological evaluations from childhood.

A report about the pool incident.

Written by Graham.

Daniel read one sentence.

SUBJECT APPEARS UNAWARE MOTHER CAUSED ENTRY INTO WATER.

He shut the file.

Arthur placed a hand on his shoulder.

The final envelope bore Charles’s name.

Inside were photographs from the night he died.

One showed Charles lying at the bottom of the stairs.

Timestamp.

8:41 p.m.

The emergency call was placed at 8:53.

Twelve minutes.

Another image showed Eleanor standing beside his body.

Not kneeling.

Not calling for help.

Standing.

Watching.

Sarah could barely look at it.

“Who took these?”

Reed answered.

“Graham.”

Daniel stared.

“Why would she keep them?”

Arthur understood.

“Because they proved Graham was there.”

Blackmail.

Eleanor had kept evidence against everyone.

Including the people who helped her.

Control through mutual destruction.

Then investigators opened the encrypted drives.

The first required a password.

Arthur guessed incorrectly.

Daniel tried several family dates.

Nothing.

Sarah looked at the label.

EV-LEGACY.

She thought about Eleanor.

Legacy.

Family.

Control.

Then she said, “Try Charles Arthur.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Our son?”

“She was obsessed with him before he was born.”

The technician typed CHARLESARTHUR.

Wrong.

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

“Try 1117.”

The time their son was born.

Wrong again.

Then Arthur whispered, “No.”

“It would be older.”

He remembered Charles’s conversation with Eleanor on the recorder.

His children.

Daniel’s future children.

“Heirs.”

The technician entered HEIRS.

The drive unlocked.

Inside were financial records.

And video files.

Hundreds.

Eleanor had secretly recorded meetings for years.

One video dated six years earlier showed Charles confronting Pike.

Another showed Graham discussing Halpern.

Then they found a file from three months earlier.

Eleanor sitting in her study.

Speaking with a man Daniel recognized.

Senator Thomas Keene.

A longtime Vance Foundation ally.

Keene said, “If Daniel proves the transfers, I’m finished.”

Eleanor replied, “Then Daniel won’t prove them.”

Keene stared at her.

“What are you suggesting?”

“Nothing you need to know.”

The senator stood.

“I want no part of this.”

Eleanor smiled.

“You already have a part.”

The video ended.

Reed immediately contacted federal authorities.

The investigation was no longer only about the Vance family.

Money from the foundation had reached political organizations, shell companies, and private accounts.

The scandal widened.

But one file disturbed Sarah more than all the others.

A recording from the morning before the balcony attack.

Eleanor spoke with Graham.

Sarah appeared only as a name.

Eleanor said, “She’s thirty-four weeks.”

Graham replied, “Then wait.”

Eleanor answered, “I have waited long enough.”

“What if she survives?”

“She won’t.”

Sarah stopped the video.

Daniel closed the laptop.

Neither spoke.

They already knew Eleanor had intended to kill her.

Hearing the words did not change the fact.

It changed something deeper.

Any last possibility that Eleanor’s act had been impulsive disappeared.

This had been planned.

Then the technician found another recording.

Same morning.

Later time.

Eleanor alone.

She made a phone call.

The other side was not recorded.

Eleanor said, “After Sarah, take care of Arthur.”

Arthur went still.

Eleanor continued.

“He knows too much.”

A pause.

Then.

“And Daniel?”

Another pause.

Eleanor looked directly toward the hidden camera she did not know existed.

“My son will come home when he learns obedience.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Sarah looked at him.

His mother had planned to kill his wife.

Kill Arthur.

Kidnap him.

All before Sarah ever stepped onto that balcony.

The fall had not triggered the nightmare.

The nightmare had already been scheduled.
