Chapter 11 - THE EMPIRE STARTS TO FALL

Charles Whitmore was arrested forty-eight hours later.
The story exploded nationally.
REAL ESTATE BILLIONAIRE ACCUSED OF CHILD CONCEALMENT, FORGERY, ARSON CONSPIRACY.
Then came the murder investigation.
Then financial fraud.
Then bribery.
Then witness intimidation.
One secret opened another.
Richard testified for eleven hours.
So did Patricia.
So did Reeve.
I testified for three.
Noah refused cameras.
“I don’t want strangers turning my life into entertainment.”
I understood.
Ethan became his shield at school.
When classmates whispered, he stared them down.
When reporters waited outside, he found side exits.
They were learning how to be brothers in the middle of a hurricane.
One evening, I found them arguing over a video game.
“You cheated,” Ethan said.
“I won.”
“You looked at my screen.”
“That’s called strategy.”
“That’s called cheating.”
Noah grinned.
I stood outside the room and cried silently.
This was what Charles had stolen.
Not money.
Not inheritance.
Ordinary moments.
Years of them.
Richard moved into a hotel.
I filed for divorce.
He didn’t fight it.
“I deserve worse,” he said.
“This isn’t punishment.”
“What is it?”
“A boundary.”
He nodded.
Then asked the question he had been afraid to ask.
“Will Noah ever forgive me?”
I looked at him.
“That’s not mine to answer.”
Noah’s DNA results came back.
99.9998 percent probability he was our biological child.
Ethan read the paper twice.
Then smiled at Noah.
“So officially, I’m the handsome twin.”
Noah threw a pillow at him.
For a few minutes, they were just fourteen.
Then my attorney called.
“There’s a problem.”
“What?”
“The Whitmore trust.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
“What now?”
“The twin clause is valid.”
“So Noah gets half?”
“Not exactly.”
I frowned.
“The trust identifies the firstborn son as controlling heir.”
“Ethan.”
My attorney hesitated.
“That’s what everyone assumed.”
My stomach tightened.
“But the original delivery record proves Baby B was delivered first.”
I looked at Noah.
“What?”
“Noah was born three minutes before Ethan.”
The room went silent.
Ethan blinked.
Noah stared.
My attorney continued.
“Legally, Noah may be the controlling heir to the entire Whitmore voting block.”
Noah slowly shook his head.
“I don’t want it.”
My attorney said, “Charles knows.”
“How?”
“He filed an emergency petition from jail.”
“For what?”
“To challenge Noah’s identity.”
I almost laughed.
“He knows Noah is his grandson.”
“He isn’t arguing that.”
“Then what is he arguing?”
My attorney’s voice hardened.
“He’s arguing that because Noah was abandoned before his birth was formally registered, he has no legal inheritance rights.”
Noah stared at me.
After everything he had survived, Charles was still trying to erase him.
May you like
Again.
