Chapter 11 - The Engagement Dinner

By Wednesday, our wedding had become a war disguised as a celebration.
Derek insisted that moving the ceremony forward required an emergency engagement dinner.
He invited thirty people.
I invited sixty.
Including Meridian’s entire board.
Including Thomas Voss.
Including Richard Hale.
Richard accepted.
That surprised Nolan.
“It shouldn’t,” I said.
“Why?”
“He wants to see what I know.”
“You’re learning.”
“I had good teachers.”
The dinner was held at the Langford Hotel.
White roses.
Crystal chandeliers.
Champagne.
Everything elegant enough to make betrayal look civilized.
Derek wore navy.
Richard arrived in black.
Thomas Voss avoided my eyes.
Clara arrived alone.
She looked at me once.
Then looked away.
Nolan stood near the bar.
He had no drink.
He rarely did when working.
Richard approached him first.
“Nolan.”
“Richard.”
“I heard you’ve been successful overseas.”
“I heard you’ve been busy at home.”
Neither smiled.
Richard glanced toward me.
“Emily looks happy.”
“She is.”
“Marriage suits some people.”
“It does.”
“For others, family loyalty becomes complicated.”
Nolan’s expression did not change.
Richard leaned closer.
“Five million dollars complicated?”
I saw Nolan’s hand tighten around his glass.
He did not react otherwise.
Good.
Richard wanted emotion.
We gave him none.
Dinner began.
Derek sat beside me.
Clara sat three seats away.
Richard opposite Nolan.
Thomas near the end.
Halfway through the first course, I stood.
Derek looked surprised.
I lifted my champagne.
“I wasn’t planning to make a speech.”
That was true.
I had planned to make an interrogation.
“But these past few days reminded me how important trust is.”
Clara looked down.
Thomas stopped eating.
Richard smiled.
“Marriage requires trust.”
I continued.
“Friendship requires trust.”
“Family requires trust.”
Nolan watched quietly.
“And business certainly requires trust.”
Now the Meridian directors were listening.
I smiled.
“So tonight, I want to thank everyone who has helped me understand exactly whom I can trust.”
Silence.
Derek touched my arm.
“Emily?”
I kissed his cheek.
“To Friday.”
Glasses lifted.
Everyone drank.
Except Richard.
Interesting.
After dinner, Thomas found me near the terrace.
“We need to talk.”
“About my prenup?”
“Yes.”
“Wonderful.”
His face was tight.
“Not here.”
“I’m surrounded by friends.”
“That’s precisely the problem.”
I smiled.
“What changed?”
“You need to postpone the wedding.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“Derek’s business situation has become unstable.”
“You told me to sign the revised agreement.”
“I’ve reconsidered.”
“Why?”
Thomas looked toward Richard.
Richard was watching us.
Fear moved across Thomas’s face.
“Because I made a mistake.”
My pulse quickened.
“What mistake?”
He lowered his voice.
“I thought Richard only wanted the property.”
“And now?”
“He wants Northstar.”
There it was.
“You know about Northstar?”
Thomas’s face changed.
He realized too late.
I had not reacted like someone hearing the word for the first time.
“You found it.”
I said nothing.
His breathing quickened.
“Emily, listen to me.”
“Why?”
“Because if Richard believes you have the archive, Friday isn’t a wedding.”
“What is it?”
“A transfer.”
“Of what?”
“Everything.”
He looked terrified.
“Control.”
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
Derek appeared behind us.
“Control of what?”
Thomas froze.
I turned.
Derek looked from him to me.
“You two okay?”
Thomas recovered badly.
“Prenup issue.”
Derek’s expression hardened.
“I thought that was handled.”
“I recommended postponing.”
“You what?”
Derek stepped closer.
Thomas whispered.
“I need to leave.”
Derek caught his arm.
“You’re staying.”
Several guests noticed.
Richard began moving toward us.
Thomas pulled free.
Then he did something no one expected.
He ran.
Not walked.
Ran.
Across the terrace.
Through the ballroom.
Toward the elevators.
Richard shouted.
“Thomas!”
Nolan signaled Marcus.
Security followed.
Thomas reached the elevator first.
The doors opened.
He stepped inside.
Then stopped.
A woman was already there.
Laura Hale.
Derek’s mother.
She held the original ledger against her chest.
The ballroom went silent.
Richard’s face lost all color.
Laura stepped out.
She looked directly at her husband.
“It’s over.”
Richard stared at her.
Then at me.
Then at Nolan.
His calm mask finally cracked.
“You stupid woman.”
Derek moved between them.
“Dad.”
Richard ignored him.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
Laura’s voice shook.
“I know exactly what I’ve done.”
She held up the ledger.
“I stopped protecting you.”
Richard lunged.
Derek caught him.
The two men collided into a table.
Glasses shattered.
Guests screamed.
Security rushed forward.
Then Richard shouted something that silenced the entire room.
He pointed at Derek.
“You think she’ll forgive you?”
His laugh was vicious.
“Tell your bride what you did to her father’s car.”
Derek froze.
I stopped breathing.
Richard smiled at me.
“Go ahead, son.”
May you like
“Tell Emily who gave Kessler the route.”
