Chapter 1 - The Man Behind the Double Doors

Raymond Saint Claire did not come through the public elevator.

That was the first sign something was terribly wrong.

Three minutes after Emily made the call, the double doors at the end of the hallway swung open with a soft hydraulic sigh, and four hospital security officers stepped out first.

Behind them walked a tall man in a charcoal suit.

His silver hair was combed neatly back.

His left hand held a phone.

His right hand was empty.

Raymond Saint Claire never carried anything he wasn't prepared to put down.

At sixty-eight, he had built a reputation for ending arguments without raising his voice.

He could sit across from a billionaire who had spent twenty minutes shouting and ask one quiet question that made the man wish he had stayed home.

Today, however, Raymond wasn't looking at a billionaire.

He was looking at his niece.

And he saw the way she was holding her stomach.

"Emily."

He crossed the hallway faster than anyone expected.

Preston straightened.

"Raymond."

Raymond didn't acknowledge him.

He stopped in front of Emily and gently touched her shoulder.

"Where did she hit you?"

Emily looked at the white tile beneath her feet.

"Just below my ribs."

"How many times?"

"Once."

"Did you fall?"

"No."

"Any bleeding?"

"Not that I've noticed."

Raymond's expression remained controlled, but something changed behind his eyes.

He turned toward the nurse behind the desk.

"Call maternal-fetal medicine."

The nurse snatched up her phone.

"Yes, Mr. Saint Claire."

"And notify the attending obstetrician."

"Right away."

Preston cleared his throat.

"Uncle Raymond, this is getting ridiculous."

Raymond turned.

The hallway fell silent.

"Don't call me that."

Preston blinked.

"What?"

"She calls me Uncle Raymond."

Raymond stepped closer.

"You call me Mr. Saint Claire."

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

"Excuse me, but who exactly are you?"

The security director, a broad-shouldered woman named Dana Brooks, looked at her.

"Ma'am, this is Raymond Saint Claire."

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Yes, I heard his name."

Dana didn't smile.

"He's the chairman of the Saint Claire Foundation."

"So?"

"He controls the real estate holding company that owns this medical campus."

The words landed slowly.

Preston looked away.

Vanessa looked at the hospital logo.

Then she looked at Preston.

"You told me your family owned this place."

Preston's jaw tightened.

"We do."

Raymond studied him.

"Do you?"

Preston opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

A wheelchair arrived.

Emily started to protest.

"I'm fine."

Raymond lowered himself until they were eye to eye.

"You're thirty-two weeks pregnant, sweetheart."

"I know."

"Then let somebody make sure my grandnephew is fine, too."

Emily's face softened.

Only slightly.

"Okay."

A nurse guided her into the chair.

As the wheels started moving, Vanessa stepped forward.

"This whole thing is absurd. I barely touched her."

Emily stopped.

For the first time since the kick, she looked directly at Vanessa.

"You used your foot."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"You were in my way."

"You came across the hallway to reach me."

"That's not what happened."

Emily lifted her eyes toward the camera above the elevator.

"Then the recording should help."

Dana touched the radio clipped to her shoulder.

"Preserve all third-floor surveillance footage starting at 8:00 a.m."

Preston moved forward.

"Hold on. You can't just take private security footage because my wife is upset."

Raymond faced him.

"She was assaulted on hospital property."

"You're taking her side without hearing mine?"

"I saw the bruise."

"You don't know what happened."

"Then you should be grateful there's a camera."

Vanessa folded her arms.

"I have an attorney."

"Good," Raymond said.

"Call him."

He turned to Dana.

"Separate the witnesses. Take their accounts independently. Nobody edits, deletes, or copies that footage without authorization."

Then he looked at Preston again.

"And make sure Mr. Whitmore doesn't leave before security obtains his statement."

Preston laughed.

"You can't detain me."

"No," Dana replied.

"We can't."

She stepped aside.

"You're free to leave. But we've already called the police, and leaving won't make the investigation disappear."

Preston's confidence flickered.

Only for a moment.

Emily watched it happen.

Then the nurse pushed her through the maternity doors.

The last thing Emily heard was Vanessa whispering, "Preston, fix this."

And Preston answering, "I will."

The examination room was quiet except for the fetal monitor.

Emily lay on her left side while Dr. Hannah Mercer studied the screen.

A steady rhythm filled the room.

Her son's heartbeat.

One hundred and forty-six beats per minute.

Emily closed her eyes.

The sound made her want to cry.

She didn't.

Not yet.

Dr. Mercer adjusted the monitor.

"Has the pain changed?"

"It's worse when I move."

"Any tightening across your abdomen?"

"Some."

"How often?"

Emily hesitated.

"I wasn't counting."

"That's all right. We're monitoring it now."

The doctor looked at Raymond.

"We need to observe her for possible complications from blunt abdominal trauma. A reassuring heartbeat is a good sign, but it doesn't rule everything out."

Raymond nodded.

"Whatever she needs."

Dr. Mercer turned to Emily.

"I'll discuss everything with you, including any testing or treatment. You're my patient."

Emily appreciated that.

In the last hour, too many people had spoken about her.

The doctor was speaking to her.

"Thank you," Emily whispered.

When Dr. Mercer left to review the ultrasound, Raymond pulled a chair beside the bed.

For a while, neither spoke.

Finally, Emily said, "I'm sorry."

Raymond's expression tightened.

"For what?"

"For bringing you into this."

"You called me because somebody hurt you."

"You told me years ago not to use your name to fight my battles."

"I did."

Raymond took her hand.

"And you listened for years longer than you should have."

Emily looked away.

"I thought Preston could change."

"Did he ever know who you were?"

"He knew I was your niece."

"That's not what I asked."

Emily stared at the ceiling.

She remembered their first apartment.

The cheap sofa.

The tiny kitchen.

Preston making pancakes at midnight because she had cried after a difficult day teaching third grade.

She remembered the man she had married.

And she wondered when that man had stopped existing.

"He knew me before his father started talking about hospital shares," she said.

Raymond didn't answer.

"Uncle Ray?"

"Yes?"

"Why did you look at Preston that way?"

Raymond released a long breath.

"Because there are things about this hospital you don't know."

Emily turned toward him.

"What things?"

He glanced at the door.

"Your husband has been asking questions about the foundation's ownership structure."

"He's the hospital's chief development officer. Isn't that his job?"

"Some questions are."

"And the others?"

Raymond hesitated.

"He's been trying to find a way around the trust your mother established."

Emily felt a cold pressure beneath her breastbone.

"My mother?"

Raymond nodded.

"The Saint Claire Foundation owns the land and the main buildings. Your mother's trust holds a controlling interest in the company that owns the medical campus, including this pavilion."

Emily stared at him.

"You said you managed the property."

"I do."

"You never said it was hers."

Raymond looked at her with an expression she hadn't seen since her mother's funeral.

"Your mother didn't want you growing up surrounded by people who loved your inheritance more than they loved you."

Emily swallowed.

"And Preston?"

"He knows enough to want control."

A knock interrupted them.

Dana Brooks entered with a tablet under her arm.

She looked first at Emily.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I'm sorry to disturb you."

"What happened?"

"The police have arrived."

Emily nodded.

"All right."

Dana didn't move.

Raymond noticed.

"What else?"

Dana glanced at the tablet.

"We recovered the hallway video."

"Good."

"There's a problem."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"What problem?"

Dana lowered her voice.

"The camera shows Mrs. Cross kicking you."

"Then what's wrong?"

Dana turned the tablet around.

A still image filled the screen.

Emily stood beside the maternity elevator.

Vanessa was several feet away.

Preston was watching.

And behind Preston stood a man in dark blue scrubs.

His face was partly hidden.

He was holding an access card against a maintenance panel beneath the security camera.

Dana touched the screen.

"This man disabled the camera's live security alert fourteen seconds before the assault."

Raymond leaned forward.

"Who is he?"

"We don't know yet."

Emily studied the image.

She recognized the scrubs.

The badge.

The silver watch.

Her mouth went dry.

"I know him."

Raymond looked at her.

"Who?"

Emily's voice was barely audible.

"That's the technician who came to our house last week."

"To do what?"

Emily looked down at her stomach.

"To install the new baby monitor Preston bought me."

May you like

And suddenly the hallway assault no longer looked like a spontaneous act of cruelty.

It looked like something somebody had arranged.
