Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN IN BLUE

Her name was Caroline Cross.

Not Caroline Miller, as listed in the clinic records.

Cross.

The hidden daughter.

The unknown half-sister of Vanessa.

The woman Catherine had never named.

Caroline had worked as a private obstetric nurse for eleven years.

Quiet.

Highly rated.

No criminal record.

No disciplinary actions.

And she had been scheduled specifically for Emily’s nonexistent early-delivery procedure.

Detective Bennett found the connection through payroll records.

Caroline’s mother was Miriam Cross.

Graham Cross’s second wife.

A marriage never publicly registered because it occurred overseas.

Emily stared at the background report.

“Where is Caroline?”

“Gone.”

Marcus said.

“She did not report for work this morning.”

“Apartment?”

“Empty.”

“Car?”

“Abandoned at a train station.”

Raymond exhaled slowly.

“She knew the plan failed.”

Margaret nodded.

“Or someone warned her.”

Emily thought immediately of Preston.

“Can you prove he contacted her?”

“Not yet.”

The board meeting was fourteen hours away.

The criminal investigation was expanding by the hour.

And Emily remained in a hospital bed because her body refused to ignore the stress.

At seven that evening, contractions returned.

Dr. Shah ordered everyone out.

Raymond protested once.

That was enough.

Dr. Shah pointed toward the hallway.

“Out.”

For the next hour Emily lay in darkness listening to her son’s heartbeat.

She thought about Caroline.

A nurse positioned inside a clinic.

A false procedure.

A mother’s shares.

A board vote.

Every piece felt designed.

Not chaotic.

Not emotional.

Designed.

At eight fifteen, Dr. Shah returned.

“The contractions are easing again.”

Emily nodded.

“You need rest.”

“I know.”

“I mean actual rest.”

“I know.”

Dr. Shah studied her.

“Do you?”

Emily looked at the ceiling.

“Probably not.”

The doctor softened.

“Your baby is doing well.”

That sentence mattered more than all the legal news combined.

“Thank you.”

Dr. Shah squeezed her hand.

After she left, Emily slept for ninety minutes.

She woke to voices outside.

Preston.

Emily recognized him instantly.

Not shouting.

Pleading.

“Five minutes.”

Marcus answered.

“No.”

“She’s my wife.”

“That argument has expired.”

“I need to tell her something.”

“You can tell your attorney.”

“It’s about Caroline Cross.”

Emily sat up.

“Marcus.”

The door opened.

Marcus looked unhappy.

“You heard.”

“Yes.”

“I don’t recommend this.”

“Is he restrained?”

“No.”

“Security?”

“Two officers.”

“Let him in.”

Raymond appeared behind Marcus.

“Absolutely not.”

Emily looked at him.

“Five minutes.”

“Emily.”

“If he knows something about Caroline, I need to hear it.”

Raymond’s jaw tightened.

Then he nodded.

Preston entered.

For the first time in twelve years, Emily looked at him without seeing her husband.

He had not shaved.

His expensive shirt was wrinkled.

His eyes were bloodshot.

No watch.

No jacket.

No confidence.

He stopped three feet from the bed.

“Em.”

“Don’t call me that.”

He flinched.

“Okay.”

Emily folded her hands over her stomach.

“Talk.”

Preston looked at Raymond.

“He stays?”

“Yes.”

Preston nodded.

“Caroline Cross is dangerous.”

Emily almost laughed.

“You scheduled her to help deliver my baby.”

“I didn’t.”

“Nathan says you scheduled the appointment.”

“I scheduled a consultation.”

“With forged consent?”

“That wasn’t me.”

“Laura says it was.”

“Laura is protecting herself.”

Emily waited.

Preston looked at her.

“I made mistakes.”

“Interesting word.”

“I had an affair.”

“A mistake.”

“I hid losses.”

“Another mistake.”

“I let Vanessa influence decisions.”

“A third mistake.”

His eyes hardened.

“You want me to say I’m a monster.”

“No.”

Emily’s voice stayed calm.

“I want you to say what you did.”

Preston looked away.

Raymond stepped forward.

“Tell her about Caroline.”

Preston inhaled.

“Vanessa introduced me to her eighteen months ago.”

“As?”

“A consultant.”

“For what?”

“Medical infrastructure deals.”

Emily stared.

“She’s a nurse.”

“I know that now.”

“You didn’t check?”

“Vanessa said Caroline represented a private investor group.”

Raymond asked.

“Graham Cross?”

Preston shook his head.

“Miriam.”

Emily looked at Raymond.

The mother.

The woman Catherine had feared.

“Who is Miriam Cross?”

Preston swallowed.

“Graham’s widow.”

“That tells us nothing.”

“She controls the money.”

“What money?”

“The Cross family money.”

Raymond scoffed.

“Graham lost nearly everything.”

Preston looked at him.

“No.”

Raymond stopped.

Preston continued.

“He hid assets before prison.”

“How much?”

“Hundreds of millions.”

Emily felt cold.

“And Miriam has it?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa works for her?”

Preston hesitated.

“Sometimes.”

“Caroline?”

“Always.”

Emily stared.

“What did Miriam want?”

Preston looked at her.

“Saint Claire.”

Raymond’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because she believes Catherine destroyed Graham.”

Emily thought of her mother’s letter.

Men like him cannot survive that truth.

“So this was revenge.”

“Revenge and money.”

Emily asked the question that mattered.

“Did Miriam order the procedure?”

Preston’s eyes dropped.

“Answer me.”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Did you know it existed?”

A pause.

Too long.

Emily felt the last piece of hope disappear.

“You knew.”

Preston looked at her.

“I found out three days ago.”

“And you did what?”

“I told Vanessa it was too far.”

Emily stared.

“You knew three days ago somebody had scheduled an early delivery in my name.”

“Yes.”

“And you did not tell me.”

“I was trying to fix it.”

“By doing what?”

“Talking to her.”

Emily’s voice broke for the first time.

“You knew.”

Preston stepped closer.

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

“I had people threatening to expose everything.”

“You were worried about your company.”

“I was worried about prison.”

There it was.

Not her.

Not the baby.

Himself.

Emily looked at Raymond.

Then back at Preston.

“Did you know Vanessa planned to hurt me today?”

“No.”

“Did you know Caroline was monitoring my appointments?”

“I knew someone was.”

Raymond swore.

Emily felt tears rise.

She did not stop them this time.

“Were you ever going to tell me?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Preston said nothing.

Emily nodded slowly.

“After the vote?”

He looked away.

That answered everything.

Emily wiped her face.

“Get out.”

“Emily.”

“Get out.”

“I came here to warn you.”

“About what?”

He hesitated.

Then reached into his shirt pocket.

Security moved instantly.

Preston froze.

“It’s paper.”

Marcus took it first.

Checked it.

Then handed it to Emily.

An address.

No name.

No explanation.

Emily looked up.

“What is this?”

“House outside Baltimore.”

“Whose?”

“Miriam Cross.”

Raymond stepped closer.

“How do you know?”

“I met her there.”

“When?”

“Eight months ago.”

“What happened?”

Preston’s face went pale.

“She showed me a file.”

Emily waited.

“What file?”

“Your mother’s.”

The room went silent.

“What was in it?”

Preston looked at Emily.

“Photographs.”

“Of Mom?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The day she died.”

Raymond moved toward him.

“What photographs?”

Preston’s voice dropped.

“Catherine getting into a car with Harold.”

Emily froze.

“My mother was with your father that day?”

“Yes.”

Raymond looked stunned.

Preston continued.

“The official timeline says Catherine went straight from Saint Claire headquarters to her house.”

Emily knew.

She had read the report.

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

“Where did Harold take her?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why did Miriam have photographs?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

Everything connected backward.

Harold.

Graham.

Miriam.

Catherine.

The hospital.

Her shares.

Her marriage.

Preston moved toward the door.

Then stopped.

“There’s one more thing.”

Emily looked at him.

“What?”

Preston’s face was full of shame.

“Vanessa didn’t meet me by accident.”

Emily’s stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?”

“She targeted me.”

“How do you know?”

“She told me.”

“When?”

“After we were already involved.”

Emily felt numb.

“Why you?”

Preston looked at her.

“No.”

His voice softened.

“She didn’t target me.”

Emily understood before he finished.

“She targeted you.”

Preston nodded.

“She said getting close to me was the easiest way to get close to Catherine’s daughter.”

Emily looked at Raymond.

Preston had been weak.

Greedy.

Unfaithful.

Dishonest.

But he had also been used.

And Emily had been the actual objective from the beginning.

Security escorted him out.

When the door closed, Raymond took the address.

“We give this to police.”

“Yes.”

“We do not go there.”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at him.

“Uncle Ray.”

“What?”

“You know we’re going to find out what’s inside that house.”

Raymond sighed.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.”

Emily looked down at her stomach.

“No.”

May you like

She shook her head.

“I’m trying to become the kind of woman she thought I could be.”
