Chapter 15 - STAND UP

The abandoned Valenti warehouse sat beside the river.

Nicholas had not entered it since his father died.

Tonight he rolled through the loading doors alone.

Or that was what Frank believed.

Hannah was two blocks away with Hector.

Police had the recording.

Federal investigators were moving on Burke.

Rebecca was safe.

Walter was alive in surgery.

Claire and Daniel had vanished after the mansion attack.

And Ethan was somewhere inside the warehouse.

Nicholas moved forward.

“Frank!”

A light clicked on.

Ethan sat tied to a chair on the upper loading platform.

Frank Valenti stood beside him.

Seventy-two.

Gray suit.

Gold watch.

Missing the tip of his left index finger.

Nicholas stared.

The photograph.

The mechanic.

It had been Frank all along.

“Let him go.”

Frank smiled.

“You look like your father in that chair.”

Nicholas’s eyes hardened.

“You hated him.”

“I hated what he gave you.”

“He left you millions.”

“He left you power.”

Frank descended the stairs.

“I built half his empire.”

“You stole from it.”

“I earned it.”

“You ruined Claire’s father.”

“He was weak.”

“You used Daniel.”

“He was greedy.”

“You poisoned me.”

Frank smiled.

“You were difficult to kill.”

Nicholas looked toward Ethan.

The boy’s eyes were wet.

But he was alive.

“Let him go and you can have me.”

Frank laughed.

“I already have you.”

He pulled a gun.

“Sign the transfer papers.”

A folder sat on a crate.

Nicholas looked at it.

“And then?”

“You die.”

“At least you’re honest.”

Nicholas rolled toward the crate.

Frank placed the papers in front of him.

“Sign.”

Nicholas picked up the pen.

His hand shook.

Not from fear.

From effort.

He placed one foot flat against the floor.

Frank didn’t notice.

Nicholas had spent every hour since discovering movement testing his legs.

Weak.

Painful.

Unreliable.

But not dead.

Hannah had told him not to try standing alone.

Nicholas had agreed.

Then Frank took Ethan.

Nicholas signed nothing.

He dropped the pen.

Frank frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Nicholas gripped the crate.

And pushed.

Pain ripped through his lower back.

His knees shook violently.

His legs nearly folded.

But Nicholas Valenti rose from the wheelchair.

Frank’s face emptied.

“No.”

Nicholas stood.

Barely.

For three seconds.

Four.

Five.

Frank stared like he had seen a dead man climb from a grave.

“You can’t.”

Nicholas looked him in the eyes.

“You should have checked.”

Frank raised the gun.

Nicholas lunged.

The shot went into the ceiling.

Both men crashed against the crate.

Nicholas fell.

Frank stumbled backward.

Then Hannah’s voice echoed from the shadows.

“Drop it!”

Frank turned.

Hannah stood with Hector and two officers behind her.

Frank grabbed Ethan.

Gun against the boy’s side.

“Back up!”

Hannah froze.

Ethan cried.

Nicholas pushed himself onto one elbow.

“Frank.”

The older man looked at him.

“You wanted the Valenti empire?”

Nicholas breathed hard.

“Take it.”

Frank frowned.

“I don’t want it anymore.”

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

Nicholas looked toward Ethan.

“None of it matters if becoming you is the price.”

Frank’s grip loosened slightly.

That was enough.

Ethan stomped hard on Frank’s foot.

Frank cursed.

Hector moved.

The gun hit the floor.

Officers tackled Frank.

Hannah ran to Ethan.

Nicholas remained on the concrete.

Breathing.

Watching.

Claire emerged from behind the loading bay.

Hannah froze.

Claire held both hands up.

“I called the police.”

Nicholas stared.

Claire had followed Frank.

She had secretly sent the warehouse location to Hector after escaping Daniel.

Daniel had fled separately.

Police found him two hours later at a private airfield.

Claire walked toward Nicholas.

“I’m sorry.”

He looked at her.

“For which part?”

Her eyes filled.

“All of it.”

Nicholas said nothing.

She crouched.

“I loved you in the end.”

“That doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“You let me get into that car.”

Claire cried.

“I know.”

“You drugged me.”

“I know.”

“You hit me when I couldn’t stand.”

Claire lowered her head.

“I know.”

Nicholas looked at her for a long time.

Then said:

“I hope one day you become someone who understands what that cost.”

Claire whispered, “Will you ever forgive me?”

Nicholas looked toward Hannah holding Ethan.

“No.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“But I’m also done hating you.”

Police led Claire away for questioning.

She did not resist.

Three months later, Frank Valenti faced charges tied to the crash, kidnapping, financial crimes, and the conspiracy against Nicholas.

Daniel faced charges for kidnapping Ethan and for his role in the attempted murder conspiracy.

Dr. Burke lost his medical license and entered a plea agreement.

Rebecca Sloan’s psychiatric record was formally challenged, and she finally returned home to her family.

Walter survived.

Hector remained at the estate.

Claire accepted responsibility for several crimes connected to the conspiracy.

Nicholas never spoke publicly about whether he forgave her.

He spoke only about evidence.

Hannah hated that answer less than she expected.

Ethan finally had his heart surgery.

It was successful.

The morning he came home, he brought Nicholas a paper crane.

“This one is for walking.”

Nicholas examined it.

One wing was longer than the other.

“It’s crooked.”

Ethan shrugged.

“Magic doesn’t care.”

Hannah laughed.

Nicholas looked at her.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re laughing at me.”

“I’m laughing at the crane.”

“The crane looks fine.”

“It looks injured.”

Ethan gasped dramatically.

“Don’t insult him.”

Nicholas held the crane carefully.

Six months after the warehouse, he stood between parallel bars in the estate therapy room.

Sweat covered his forehead.

His legs shook.

Hannah stood several feet away.

“You’ve got it.”

“Stop saying that.”

“You do.”

“I hate motivational nursing.”

“This isn’t motivational nursing.”

“What is it?”

“Annoying encouragement.”

“That’s worse.”

He took one step.

Then another.

Then his knee buckled.

Hannah caught him.

For a second they were close.

Too close.

Nicholas looked at her.

She looked back.

He smiled.

Not the cold smile reporters knew.

Not the dangerous smile men feared.

Something quieter.

Real.

“You know,” he said, “the first day you came here, I thought you’d last a week.”

Hannah helped him straighten.

“I thought you were unbearable.”

“Thought?”

“You’re still unbearable.”

He laughed.

From the doorway, Ethan shouted:

“Are you two getting married?”

Hannah nearly dropped Nicholas.

Nicholas looked over her shoulder.

“No.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why not?”

Hannah said, “Homework.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It is today.”

Ethan disappeared down the hall.

Nicholas looked at Hannah.

“Kids ask dangerous questions.”

“So do mafia bosses.”

His smile faded slightly.

“I’m not going back to that life.”

Hannah studied him.

“What life?”

“The one where fear is the only reason people listen.”

She nodded.

“That sounds healthy.”

“Don’t sound so surprised.”

“I’m a nurse. I believe in evidence.”

Nicholas looked at the parallel bars.

Then at the paper crane Ethan had placed on the windowsill.

He tightened his grip.

“What if I fall?”

Hannah stepped back.

“You probably will.”

Nicholas raised an eyebrow.

“Excellent bedside manner.”

“You asked.”

“And then?”

“You get up.”

He looked at her.

The answer seemed to reach deeper than the physical therapy room.

The crash.

The poison.

The lies.

Claire.

Daniel.

Frank.

The wheelchair.

The months stolen from him.

Nicholas inhaled.

Then he took another step.

His leg shook.

But held.

Another.

Hannah did not touch him.

She let him do it himself.

At the doorway, Ethan appeared again, silently holding the crooked paper crane.

Nicholas reached the end of the bars.

His hands released.

For one second, he stood without holding anything.

Then two.

Three.

Hannah smiled.

Nicholas looked at her.

“Don’t say it.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

“You were.”

“Maybe.”

He took one final step.

And this time, he did not fall.

Outside, Lake Michigan stretched beneath a clear morning sky.

Inside the mansion where Nicholas Valenti had once been poisoned, betrayed, humiliated, and nearly killed, he stood on his own feet.

Not because someone saved him.

Because when every lie was finally stripped away, he had discovered something the people who tried to destroy him had never understood.

Taking away a man’s power was not the same as taking away his future.

May you like

And Nicholas Valenti was finally ready to build a different one.
