Chapter 12 - Midnight

Grant gave no location.

That was intentional.

He wanted Daniel waiting for instructions.

Nervous.

Reactive.

Easier to control.

At 11:02, the next message arrived.

A photograph.

Maya sat on the floor of an unknown room.

Her hands were free.

She looked exhausted but physically unharmed.

Behind her was a cinderblock wall.

A digital clock showed 11:01.

Proof she was alive.

Under the image were coordinates.

An unfinished shopping center outside town.

Ruiz immediately began planning.

Grant sent a second message.

CARTER ALONE.

NO POLICE.

Daniel almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because Grant still believed Daniel’s strongest weakness was his desire to control everything personally.

Five days earlier, Grant would have been right.

Now Daniel had finally learned something.

Helping did not mean being alone.

He agreed publicly.

Privately, police prepared.

Daniel placed photocopies of the three ledger pages inside an envelope.

The originals remained secured.

At 11:42, he drove into the empty shopping-center lot.

Rain had started.

The development had failed during construction.

Concrete foundations and steel frames stood like unfinished skeletons.

Daniel stopped beneath a temporary light.

His phone rang.

“Get out.”

Grant.

Daniel obeyed.

“Hold up the envelope.”

Daniel did.

“Walk toward the building.”

Daniel moved.

He knew Ruiz’s team was positioned beyond sight.

He also knew Grant might have scouts.

Every step mattered.

Inside the unfinished structure, rain struck exposed metal overhead.

“Keep walking.”

Daniel followed instructions through the phone.

Then he saw Maya.

She sat on a folding chair twenty yards ahead.

Grant stood behind her.

No visible weapon.

That did not reassure Daniel.

“Pages.”

Grant held out his hand.

Daniel stopped ten yards away.

“Let her walk to me.”

Grant smiled.

“You negotiate buildings.”

“Not this.”

“Tonight I negotiate everything.”

“You’re running out of options.”

“Am I?”

“Wade’s in custody.”

“Your companies are being investigated.”

“Police know about Julia.”

At her mother’s name, Maya looked up.

Grant’s smile faded.

“You don’t know anything about Julia.”

“I know she left evidence.”

“I know Rebecca helped her.”

“And I know someone used my company to move stolen money.”

Grant laughed.

“You rich men are incredible.”

“You lose track of half a million dollars and suddenly you’re the victim.”

Daniel did not react.

“Where is Julia?”

Maya stopped breathing.

Grant looked at her.

Then Daniel.

“She left.”

“Seven months ago?”

“Yes.”

“Without her children?”

“She wasn’t Mother of the Year.”

Maya’s face changed.

Anger overcame fear.

“She would never leave Caleb.”

Grant grabbed the chair.

“Quiet.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t touch her.”

Grant looked at him.

“There it is.”

“The hero.”

Daniel remembered Rebecca’s letter.

Do not try to be a hero.

So he did something Grant did not expect.

He dropped the envelope.

Grant stared.

“Pick it up.”

“No.”

“What?”

“You want the pages?”

“Let Maya walk over.”

“You don’t set terms.”

“Then you don’t get them.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“You think those pages save you?”

“They don’t.”

“They prove you were paid too.”

“Fake records.”

“Tell that to federal investigators.”

Daniel was guessing.

But Grant’s reaction told him the pressure was real.

Federal involvement terrified him.

Daniel continued.

“Your operation is finished.”

“Even if you disappear tonight.”

“Even if you burn every page.”

“People know.”

“Wade knows.”

“Peter Voss knows.”

“Marcus knows.”

“Police know.”

“Julia made sure you couldn’t erase everything.”

Grant’s face twisted at Julia’s name.

“She thought she was smarter than me.”

Maya stared at him.

Daniel caught it.

Past tense.

Not she thinks.

She thought.

Ruiz had told Daniel not to push questions about Julia if Grant became unstable.

But Maya had heard it too.

“Where is my mom?”

Grant ignored her.

“Where is she?”

“Maya.”

Daniel’s voice was gentle.

“Not now.”

She looked at him.

Then back at Grant.

“You did something to her.”

Grant grabbed her shoulder.

Maya jerked away.

At that moment, something moved high above them.

A police officer crossing a catwalk.

Grant saw the shadow.

His face changed.

“You brought them.”

Daniel did not lie.

“Yes.”

Grant pulled Maya up.

Then ran.

Everything happened at once.

Police shouted.

Maya screamed.

Daniel moved without thinking.

Grant dragged Maya toward an opening in the unfinished wall.

Beyond it was a steep drainage slope slick with rain.

Daniel reached them.

Grant shoved Maya sideways.

She fell but caught a steel support.

Daniel grabbed Grant’s jacket.

Grant swung.

Pain exploded along Daniel’s cheek.

Daniel held on.

Grant struck him again.

Then officers were everywhere.

Grant was pulled down.

Handcuffed.

Maya crawled away.

Daniel released him.

He did not hit back.

He did not need to.

Maya stood in the rain.

For three seconds she simply stared at Daniel.

Then she ran into him.

He caught her.

She shook violently.

“Caleb.”

“He’s safe.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Police led Grant away.

As he passed Maya, he smiled.

That smile disturbed Daniel more than the punches.

Because Grant whispered something.

“You still don’t know where she is.”

Maya’s grip tightened around Daniel’s coat.

And Daniel understood.

They had rescued Maya.

May you like

They had not solved Julia’s disappearance.

Not yet.
