Chapter 10 - The Mercer Resort

The resort had been closed for eleven years.

Lake Mercer Lodge.

Sixty acres of forest.

Private road.

Stone hotel.

Cabins.

Boathouse.

A place built for wealthy families to pretend wilderness belonged to them.

Thomas chose it because the Mercers still controlled the land through dormant subsidiaries.

What he did not know was that Bluebird owned the debt beneath those subsidiaries.

Technically, Ellie owned the ground under his feet.

We arrived at 8:07 p.m.

No police vehicles.

No visible Kingsley security.

That was deliberate.

Twenty minutes earlier, two security teams had entered the property through forest roads.

Grant wore a microphone.

So did Adrian.

I wore one beneath my sweater.

The ledger was in my tote.

The falcon phone rested beside it.

We entered through the main lobby.

Dust covered everything except a path across the floor.

Recent footsteps.

Lights burned in the old ballroom.

Thomas waited there.

Six men stood along the walls.

Ellie sat at a small table eating crackers.

Alive.

Unhurt.

I nearly ran to her.

Thomas raised one hand.

"Not yet."

Ellie saw me.

"Mommy!"

"I'm here."

Grant's breathing changed beside me.

Thomas smiled.

He looked more like Samuel Jr. than the old security footage had suggested.

Same narrow jaw.

Same Mercer posture.

The posture Grant had inherited through imitation rather than blood.

"You brought the ledger."

"Let her go."

"After."

"No."

"Mara."

"You need all three signatures."

Thomas's smile faded slightly.

"Richard trained you well."

"No."

I looked at Ellie.

"He taught me never to give away the only thing keeping someone alive."

Thomas nodded.

"Fair."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Why Bluebird?"

"Because it should never have existed."

"It exists because Samuel stole."

"It exists because Richard stole better."

"Celeste wanted it."

Thomas's face changed.

"Do not speak her name."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"She was my mother."

"She was my sister."

There it was.

Thomas's grief.

Buried beneath forty years of greed.

"Then why help Samuel take her money?"

"I didn't."

Thomas looked at Adrian.

"I tried to stop him."

"By killing Richard?"

"Richard let Celeste die."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

Thomas laughed bitterly.

"You think Samuel caused the hospital fire?"

"Didn't he?"

"No."

"Richard did."

I stepped forward.

"You're lying."

"Ask Evelyn."

"My mother wasn't there when the fire started."

"Ask Catherine."

Catherine had remained offsite.

Thomas could not know where.

Unless—

He looked at the microphones beneath our clothes as though he could see them.

"She's listening."

My blood chilled.

"Catherine."

No answer.

Then Thomas shouted toward the ceiling.

"Tell them."

Our earpieces crackled.

Catherine's voice came through.

"Mara."

Grant swore.

Thomas had compromised the channel.

"Tell them what Richard did."

Catherine whispered, "He didn't start the fire."

"But?"

"He disabled the nursery alarm."

I shut my eyes.

Why?

"Because Samuel had arranged for Adrian to disappear during the evacuation."

"Richard wanted to remove him first."

Thomas smiled.

"He gambled with every baby on that floor to save one."

"That isn't the same as causing the fire."

"No."

Thomas's eyes hardened.

"But Celeste died in the confusion."

Adrian looked sick.

The moral certainty around my father cracked.

He had saved Adrian.

But maybe his methods had cost Celeste her life.

People were not saints or villains.

They were choices.

Some unforgivable.

Thomas pointed to the table.

"Ledger."

"Ellie first."

"Signatures first."

Grant moved slightly.

One of Thomas's men drew a gun.

Ellie began crying.

Grant stopped.

I looked at Thomas.

"You need her DNA too."

"Correct."

"So even after we sign, you cannot kill her."

"No."

"Me?"

"Unnecessary."

"Grant?"

Thomas smiled.

"Very."

Grant stared at him.

I put the ledger on the table.

Thomas opened it.

Three signature lines.

He placed a pen beside them.

"Adrian."

Adrian signed.

Grant looked at him.

I did too.

Thomas smiled.

Then Adrian turned the ledger around.

His signature did not match his legal signature.

Deliberately.

Thomas's smile disappeared.

"You think I'm stupid?"

"No."

Adrian stepped closer.

"I think you're angry."

Outside, something exploded.

The ballroom lights died.

Kingsley security.

Thomas's men moved.

Grant lunged toward Ellie.

Gunfire hit the ceiling.

Glass shattered.

I dropped behind the table.

Someone grabbed my coat.

I drove my elbow backward.

Sloane's voice came through my earpiece.

"East door, Mara."

I crawled.

Grant reached Ellie.

Thomas reached Grant.

They crashed into the floor.

Adrian tackled one of the armed men.

Security flooded the ballroom.

Ten seconds.

Maybe fifteen.

Then alarms screamed.

Grant lifted Ellie and ran toward me.

"Daddy!"

"I've got you."

A shot cracked.

Grant jerked.

My heart stopped.

He stayed standing.

Blood spread across his upper arm.

"Grant."

"Go."

We reached the east corridor.

Security surrounded us.

Then Thomas's voice came over the resort speakers.

"Mara."

We stopped.

"You forgot something."

I looked down.

The ledger.

Still in the ballroom.

Thomas had it.

But no valid signatures.

He continued.

"Richard built redundancies."

My stomach dropped.

"Three signatures or one biometric authorization from the beneficiary."

Ellie.

Grant tightened his arms around her.

Then Ellie screamed.

Not from pain.

From fear.

She was staring at her own hand.

One finger had blood on it.

A tiny puncture.

May you like

Thomas had already taken what he needed.

Her DNA.
