Chapter 14 - The Trial of the Moretti Empire

The truth arrived in pieces.

Not with a gunshot.

Not with a confession shouted across a table.

But through recordings, bank documents, and testimony from people who had spent years believing silence was the only way to survive.

Lucia came to New York under protective arrangements.

She met Alessandro in a quiet room at his attorney's office.

Rosa was present.

Lily remained nearby with a trusted caregiver.

For the first time in four years, Alessandro and Lucia sat together without their father's influence hanging between them.

Lucia looked at the documents spread across the table.

“Vincent called you?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“That you have evidence against Father.”

Lucia closed her eyes.

Alessandro waited.

Finally, she nodded.

“I do.”

Rosa reached for her hand.

Lucia gave her a grateful look.

Then she opened her handbag.

Inside was a small encrypted storage device.

“I kept copies of the financial records.”

Alessandro stared at it.

“Why didn't you give them to anyone?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Before I disappeared.”

She swallowed.

“I contacted an investigator.”

“What happened?”

“He stopped returning my calls.”

“Was he working for Vincent?”

“I don't know.”

She looked toward the window.

“After that, Father told me I was putting everyone in danger.”

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

“Did Father participate in the fraud?”

Lucia nodded.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt.

Not because it surprised him.

Because some part of him had still wanted to believe that Vittorio's final letter was the complete truth.

Lucia continued.

“Father knew that Vincent was stealing money through their joint companies.”

“Why didn't he stop it?”

“Because he was doing it too.”

The room fell silent.

Alessandro looked down at his father's handwriting.

For years, he had treated Vittorio as a complicated man whose cruelty was balanced by loyalty.

Now he understood that his father had built a family culture where loyalty meant protecting powerful people from the consequences of their choices.

Even when those choices destroyed innocent lives.

“What happened when you confronted him?” Alessandro asked.

Lucia's expression tightened.

“He admitted it.”

“And?”

“He said he wanted to repair the damage.”

“That's why he created Lily's trust.”

“Partly.”

Alessandro looked up.

Lucia continued.

“He wanted to return assets obtained through fraudulent deals.”

“To whom?”

“To the rightful owners and victims.”

Daniel, who was present only through records obtained by counsel, had previously assumed that every asset belonged to Lily.

But the structure was more complicated.

The trust held disputed ownership interests, restitution reserves, and legitimate family property.

Lily's eventual inheritance depended upon the outcome of legal proceedings and the separation of legitimate assets from unlawful proceeds.

Alessandro studied the paperwork.

“So Lily doesn't simply inherit everything.”

Lucia shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why did Vincent want her dead?”

“Because her existence activated the trust's review provisions.”

Rosa frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Lucia turned toward her.

“When Lily's paternity was formally acknowledged, independent trustees were required to examine the underlying assets.”

“And that would reveal the fraud?”

“Yes.”

Lucia looked at Alessandro.

“Vincent couldn't afford that review.”

Alessandro closed his eyes.

His daughter had nearly been killed over the possibility that accountants and lawyers might uncover decades of theft.

The absurdity was horrifying.

Rosa began crying quietly.

Lucia reached for her.

“I'm sorry.”

Rosa shook her head.

“You didn't do this.”

“No.”

Lucia looked at the papers.

“But I knew enough to understand that something terrible might happen.”

Alessandro lifted his head.

“You were threatened too.”

Lucia nodded.

“And I was afraid.”

He reached across the table.

“So was Rosa.”

Both women looked at him.

He continued.

“And I've spent my whole life pretending that fear is something weak people feel.”

He looked down.

“I was wrong.”

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Then Samuel entered.

His face was serious.

“We have developments.”

Alessandro stood.

“What happened?”

“Enzo Bellini has been taken into custody.”

Catherine Bellini, who had been waiting in another room, began crying when she heard.

Samuel continued.

“Investigators also obtained warrants connected to several Romano-controlled businesses.”

“And Vincent?”

Samuel hesitated.

“His location is currently unknown.”

Alessandro's expression hardened.

“What about Isabella?”

“She has agreed to speak with investigators through counsel.”

Rosa looked up.

“She's cooperating?”

“Apparently.”

Samuel turned toward Alessandro.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“The financial records implicate several Moretti companies.”

Alessandro nodded.

“I expected that.”

“Some transactions occurred during your leadership.”

“I know.”

Samuel paused.

“You could face serious scrutiny.”

Alessandro looked toward Rosa.

Then at Lucia.

Finally, he nodded.

“Then I'll answer the questions.”

Samuel studied him.

“Do you understand what that could mean?”

“Yes.”

“You may lose substantial assets.”

“I know.”

“Control of companies.”

“I know.”

“Your reputation.”

Alessandro gave a tired smile.

“Samuel, my reputation has never been something a decent man should want.”

The attorney fell silent.

Alessandro looked toward the room where Lily was playing.

He watched her through the open doorway.

She had arranged wooden animals into a crooked line.

Her stuffed rabbit sat at the front.

She was telling them something very serious.

He couldn't hear the words.

But her expression reminded him so much of his mother that his chest tightened.

He turned back.

“Do what needs to be done.”

Three days later, Vincent Romano finally made a mistake.

He called Isabella.

His daughter had spent the previous seventy-two hours with attorneys, considering what her future would look like if she continued protecting him.

She had lost her engagement.

Her reputation was collapsing.

And she had learned that the father she had spent twenty-eight years trying to please had considered her expendable.

When Vincent demanded that she meet him, Isabella contacted her attorney.

The attorney notified investigators.

A controlled meeting was arranged under their supervision.

Vincent believed he was speaking to the frightened daughter who had always obeyed him.

Instead, he was speaking to a woman who had finally decided to tell the truth.

They met at a private residence outside Manhattan.

Vincent entered through the rear door.

He wore a dark overcoat.

His silver hair was perfectly combed.

He smiled when he saw Isabella.

“My beautiful girl.”

She remained seated.

“Hello, Father.”

He approached.

“You've caused quite a mess.”

She looked down.

“I know.”

“Your future husband has become difficult.”

“Yes.”

Vincent poured himself a drink.

“Fortunately, that can be corrected.”

Isabella looked up.

“How?”

He smiled.

“Men like Alessandro only understand consequences.”

She stared at him.

“Did you really order the attack on his daughter?”

Vincent's smile disappeared.

“Don't ask foolish questions.”

“I need to know.”

“No.”

“Father.”

He slammed the glass onto the table.

“Enough!”

Isabella flinched.

Then she forced herself to remain still.

“She's three years old.”

Vincent stared at her.

“What?”

“Lily.”

His expression hardened.

“She was three years old.”

“Children grow up.”

“She hasn't done anything.”

“She represents a legal threat.”

Isabella's eyes filled.

“That's why you wanted her dead?”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“Don't pretend innocence now.”

She lowered her head.

He continued.

“You knew what had to happen.”

“Did you order the van that almost killed Rosa?”

Vincent's face tightened.

“Who told you about that?”

“Alessandro.”

“Of course.”

He turned away.

“Your future husband has become sentimental.”

Isabella stared at him.

“And Elena Moretti?”

Vincent stopped moving.

“What about her?”

“Did you kill her too?”

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he turned.

His face had changed.

“Be very careful.”

Isabella began trembling.

“Please tell me the truth.”

Vincent approached.

He lowered himself into the chair opposite her.

“Truth?”

She nodded.

He smiled coldly.

“The truth is that Elena Moretti would have ruined a deal worth millions.”

Isabella covered her mouth.

“So you had her killed.”

Vincent leaned forward.

“I did what was necessary.”

The room seemed to freeze.

Isabella began crying.

“You murdered her.”

He shrugged.

“Your generation has no stomach for difficult decisions.”

She stared at him.

“And Rosa?”

Vincent's expression darkened.

“A problem that should have been handled years ago.”

“And Lily?”

He remained silent.

Isabella wiped her cheeks.

“Answer me.”

Vincent leaned closer.

“Do you know how many empires have fallen because some man couldn't control his affection for a woman?”

She shook her head.

“Do you know how many fortunes disappear because people start confusing family with weakness?”

“Father—”

He slammed his hand against the table.

“That child should never have existed!”

Isabella recoiled.

Then something inside her seemed to change.

She looked directly at him.

“No.”

Vincent stared.

“What?”

“She should never have been threatened.”

His expression hardened.

“You're forgetting who you're speaking to.”

For the first time in her life, Isabella did not lower her eyes.

“No, Father.”

She stood.

“I finally know exactly who you are.”

Vincent rose.

“What have you done?”

Before Isabella could answer, officers entered the room.

They identified themselves and instructed Vincent to keep his hands visible.

Vincent stared at them.

Then at Isabella.

His expression changed from disbelief to fury.

“You!”

Isabella stepped backward.

An officer moved between them.

Vincent shouted her name.

She began crying.

But she did not turn away.

As he was taken into custody, he looked back one final time.

“You've destroyed this family!”

Isabella stood trembling.

Then she answered in a voice barely above a whisper.

“No, Father.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“You did.”

The arrests made national headlines.

Authorities announced charges involving organized criminal activity, fraud, conspiracy, and violence.

Vincent Romano denied wrongdoing through his attorneys.

Enzo Bellini also faced serious charges related to his alleged role in the attacks and Arthur Bellini's death.

Several additional suspects were identified.

Investigators continued reviewing the broader financial network.

The cases would take years to resolve.

But the immediate threat against Rosa and Lily had changed.

Alessandro cooperated with legal proceedings through counsel.

The legitimate parts of the Moretti business were subjected to independent review.

Some assets were frozen.

Others were transferred into restitution arrangements.

Several executives resigned.

And Alessandro stepped away from criminal operations that had defined his family's identity for generations.

It was not a clean escape.

He understood that there would be consequences for his own past.

But he was finally willing to face them.

One evening, after another exhausting meeting with his attorneys, Alessandro returned to the safe residence where Rosa and Lily were staying.

He found Lily sitting beside the window.

She was holding Bun.

When she saw him, her face lit up.

“Big man!”

He smiled.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

She ran toward him.

He lifted her into his arms.

“Did you have a good day?”

She nodded.

“Mommy made pancakes.”

“Really?”

“With bananas.”

“That sounds wonderful.”

Lily considered him.

Then she looked toward Rosa.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

The little girl pointed at Alessandro.

“Can Big Man stay?”

Rosa looked at him.

Alessandro waited.

For once, he did not try to control the answer.

Rosa smiled gently.

“For dinner?”

Lily nodded.

“And stories.”

Rosa looked at Alessandro.

He smiled.

“If that's okay.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Lily clapped.

Then she pressed her little face against Alessandro's shoulder.

For a moment, he thought the worst might finally be over.

But that night, after Lily fell asleep, Rosa found an envelope waiting for her among the legal papers.

It had been delivered by Samuel.

Inside was a copy of the court filing acknowledging Alessandro's paternity.

And beneath it was a personal letter.

Alessandro had written it by hand.

Rosa unfolded the page.

She read the first line.

Then sat down.

Because the letter did not contain a promise of wealth.

May you like

It contained something she had never expected from the man who once seemed capable of owning the world.

An apology without an excuse.
