Chapter 1 - The Glass That Never Reached His Lips

"Sir, please don't taste it."
My voice cut through the dining room just as Julian Ashford raised his crystal glass.
Thirty-two guests turned toward me.
The string quartet stopped playing.
And Victoria Ashford looked at me as though she wanted me buried beneath the marble floor.
"Elena," she said through clenched teeth.
"Do not embarrass this family!"
I stood beside the enormous mahogany dining table, gripping the silver serving tray so tightly that my fingers hurt.
My name is Elena Morales.
I was twenty-seven years old, and until that evening, I had worked as a housemaid at the Ashford estate for just eleven months.
I knew how to disappear into the background.
I knew when to speak and when to keep my eyes lowered.
But I also knew what I had seen forty-three minutes earlier.
And if Julian drank from that glass, there might never be another chance to tell him.
"Put it down, sir."
Julian stared at me.
At thirty-eight, Julian Ashford was one of the most powerful real estate investors in New York.
His company owned hotels, office towers, and luxury developments across seven states.
He was also the sole heir to a family fortune valued at nearly nine hundred million dollars.
His father had died six months earlier.
His wife had been waiting for that inheritance ever since.
"What are you doing with my glass?" Julian asked.
Victoria rose from her chair.
"She has completely lost her mind."
I stepped closer.
"Please, Mr. Ashford."
"Look at that decanter."
The crystal decanter stood beside his plate.
It was filled with a dark red wine Victoria had personally selected from the family cellar.
Julian glanced at it.
"What about it?"
"Look at the silver tag."
His eyes narrowed.
A small silver label hung from the decanter's neck.
On it, someone had written a single name.
JULIAN.
Victoria laughed.
"Of course it has his name."
"It's his birthday dinner."
"She marked it for a reason," I said.
The laughter stopped.
Victoria's expression hardened.
"Get that maid out of here immediately!"
Two security guards near the doorway moved forward.
Julian raised his hand.
"Wait."
His voice was quiet.
But everyone obeyed.
He looked at me again.
"Let her speak."
I swallowed.
"Your wife came into the pantry at 5:47 this afternoon."
"She thought nobody was watching."
"She opened that decanter."
"And she put something inside it."
A woman at the far end of the table gasped.
Victoria slammed her palm against the table.
"That is an absolute lie!"
I reached into my apron.
"I have the whole thing recorded on video."
For the first time that evening, Victoria looked frightened.
It lasted less than a second.
Then she smiled.
"Of course you do."
"A conveniently edited video from a desperate employee."
Julian extended his hand.
"Show me the screen."
I placed my phone in his palm.
The video began.
On the screen, Victoria entered the pantry wearing the same emerald-green evening gown she had on now.
She checked the hallway.
Then she removed a small amber vial from her handbag.
She poured its contents into the crystal decanter.
Finally, she attached the silver label.
Julian watched without blinking.
Victoria stepped forward.
"Don't look at that fake video!"
Julian moved the phone away from her.
"Security."
The head of security, Marcus Bell, straightened.
"Sir?"
"Block the doors immediately."
The room erupted.
Guests stood.
Chairs scraped across the floor.
Someone whispered about calling an attorney.
Victoria's face went pale.
"You can't imprison your guests, Julian."
"I'm not imprisoning anyone."
"I'm asking them to remain while the police establish what happened."
He looked at the phone again.
"Elena, when was this taken?"
"Look at the timestamp."
"5:47 this afternoon."
Julian stared at his wife.
For twelve years, Victoria had worn the Ashford family name.
She had hosted charity galas, appeared on magazine covers, and stood beside him at every public event.
Now she was standing six feet away from him, watching a recording of herself contaminating his wine.
"What did you put in there?" he asked.
Victoria shook her head.
"Nothing."
"Then why did you open the vial?"
"That recording has been manipulated."
Julian stood.
"Victoria."
His voice cracked.
"Did you try to take my life for the inheritance?"
Her face twisted.
"You can't prove anything in court!"
Nobody spoke.
Even Victoria seemed to realize what she had just said.
Julian slowly set the phone down.
"The police are already on their way up."
Victoria backed away from the table.
Then she laughed.
Not nervously.
Not helplessly.
She laughed like someone who had just remembered a secret weapon.
"You really think I'm the only person in this room who wants your money?"
Julian went still.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria turned toward the servants standing along the wall.
Her eyes found me.
"Ask your precious little maid why she was really hired."
My stomach dropped.
Julian looked at me.
"Elena?"
I opened my mouth.
But Victoria spoke first.
"Ask her what happened to her father."
The silver tray slipped from my hands.
It struck the floor with a crash.
Julian looked between us.
And I realized something terrible.
May you like
Victoria knew exactly who I was.
Before I could say another word, every light in the dining room went out.
