Chapter 14 - WHAT MAKES A FATHER

Police surrounded the mansion.
Claire had locked herself inside the old conservatory.
With Maria.
Salvatore watched the security feed.
Claire held a handgun.
Maria sat on the floor several feet away, frightened but alive.
“Give me the drive,” Claire said through the house intercom.
Salvatore pressed the response button.
“You’re not leaving here.”
“Neither is Maria if you keep pretending you have control.”
Ruby grabbed his sleeve.
“Daddy, don’t go.”
He looked down.
For years Salvatore had believed protection meant providing everything.
Doctors.
Security.
Money.
A perfect house.
He understood now.
Sometimes protection meant staying.
Sometimes it meant listening before disaster forced you to.
He kissed Ruby’s forehead.
“I’m not leaving you.”
Marco looked at him.
“We need someone to bring her a fake drive.”
“No.”
“Boss—”
“She knows my people.”
Vincent stepped forward.
“I’ll do it.”
“No.”
“You don’t get to make every decision.”
“She may shoot you.”
Vincent gave a tired smile.
“You punched me harder than that once.”
Despite everything, Salvatore almost laughed.
Police formed the plan.
Vincent approached the conservatory carrying a decoy flash drive.
Claire opened the door only six inches.
“Where’s Salvatore?”
“Protecting his daughter.”
“Coward.”
Vincent held up the drive.
“You want this or not?”
Claire opened the door wider.
That was the mistake.
Maria threw herself sideways.
Vincent dropped.
Police fired a stun round through the opening.
Claire screamed and fell.
Officers rushed in.
Within seconds, she was restrained.
No dramatic death.
No revenge.
No blood on Salvatore’s hands.
Just handcuffs.
Evidence.
Consequences.
Exactly what Lucinda had been promised.
At dawn, police vehicles filled the driveway.
Matteo was charged with conspiracy, fraud, endangerment, and evidence tampering.
Claire faced even more.
The investigation into Sofia’s death was reopened.
Lucinda sat in the back of another police car.
Before the door closed, she saw Ruby beside Salvatore.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Lucinda said:
“I did love you.”
Salvatore’s expression remained calm.
“No.”
She flinched.
“You loved being chosen.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“You hurt my daughter because she reminded you that love wasn’t ownership.”
Lucinda looked at Ruby.
“I’m sorry.”
Ruby moved closer to her father.
Salvatore answered for her.
“She doesn’t owe you forgiveness.”
The officer closed the door.
The car drove away.
Ruby watched until it disappeared.
Then she looked up.
“Daddy?”
“Yes?”
“Are you mad at me?”
The question devastated him.
“Why would I be mad at you?”
“Because I didn’t tell you.”
Salvatore knelt.
“You tried.”
Ruby’s eyes filled.
“I thought you would think I was lying.”
He took both her hands.
“I should have made sure you knew you could tell me anything.”
“But you left a lot.”
There it was.
Not accusation.
Fact.
Salvatore nodded.
“I did.”
“Are you going to leave again?”
He could have made a promise no adult could keep.
I will never leave.
Instead, he told her the truth.
“I’ll still have to go places sometimes.”
Ruby looked down.
“But you will always know who is with you. You’ll always know when I’m coming home. And if you say something is wrong, I will listen the first time.”
Ruby studied him.
“Promise?”
He held out his pinky.
“Promise.”
She linked hers with his.
Then Dr. Hale entered the hall.
His expression was serious.
“Salvatore, I have Ruby’s new scans.”
Salvatore stood.
“How bad is it?”
The doctor looked at Ruby.
Then at him.
“The repeated strain caused more damage than we hoped.”
Ruby squeezed her father’s hand.
Dr. Hale continued.
May you like
“She may need surgery.”
