Chapter 12 - The Man Who Finally Told the Truth

The scream lasted less than two seconds.

Then I heard a crash.

A man shouted.

Caleb.

"GET AWAY FROM HER!"

The phone fell.

There was a struggle.

Something heavy hit the floor.

Then silence.

I screamed Lily's name.

No answer.

Detective Collins grabbed her radio.

"All units, possible immediate danger to the child."

I heard officers moving.

Orders being given.

A vehicle engine starting.

Then Gideon's voice returned.

He was breathing hard.

"Daniel."

I couldn't speak.

"Your daughter is alive."

I closed my eyes.

"Put her on."

"Not yet."

"PUT HER ON!"

A pause.

Then Lily's voice.

"Daddy?"

I nearly collapsed.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

She was crying.

"The bad man got mad."

I swallowed.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Where's Caleb?"

"He fell down."

My heart pounded.

Gideon took the phone.

"Enough."

I felt rage rise.

"Gideon, if you touch her—"

"Then do what I asked."

I looked at Collins.

She shook her head.

I took a breath.

"Listen to me."

"No, Daniel."

His voice hardened.

"You listen."

A pause.

"The final transfer is in ninety minutes. I need the signed documents and the key."

I stared at the phone.

"You're not getting them."

Silence.

Then Gideon spoke softly.

"You sound like your father."

I looked at Mom.

She was crying.

Gideon continued.

"Arthur made the same mistake."

I swallowed.

"What mistake?"

"He thought he could control the situation."

I leaned forward.

"Arthur made plenty of mistakes."

A pause.

"But you're the one who turned them into crimes."

Gideon laughed.

"Your father signed agreements. He authorized payments. He kept records hidden."

"I know."

"He lied to you."

"I know."

"He let you bury a stranger."

My eyes filled.

"I know."

Gideon went quiet.

I continued.

"And he'll answer for what he did."

A pause.

Then Gideon spoke with genuine surprise.

"You would turn your own father over to the authorities?"

I stared.

"I already did."

Silence.

For the first time all day, Gideon had no clever answer.

I continued.

"That's the difference between us."

He said nothing.

"You think family means protecting people from consequences."

I swallowed.

"I think it means protecting them from harm."

Then I ended the call.

Detective Collins looked at me.

"Good."

I shook my head.

"He's getting desperate."

"Yes."

I looked at the map.

"And desperate people make mistakes."

She nodded.

Then her radio crackled.

"Approach team in position."

My heart pounded.

"Any visual?"

"Living room lights on. Two figures visible."

"Child?"

A pause.

"Negative visual."

I closed my eyes.

Another officer spoke.

"Boathouse entrance located."

Collins lifted the radio.

"Proceed carefully."

I stood beside her.

Waiting.

Then a new voice came over the radio.

Older.

Breathless.

"Sarah?"

Collins frowned.

"Identify yourself."

"Arthur Whitmore."

I turned.

My father?

He wasn't supposed to be there.

Collins looked toward an officer.

"Where is Mr. Whitmore?"

The radio crackled.

"He's at the south gate."

I stared.

Dad had left the station.

How?

Why?

His voice returned.

"I know where Gideon is keeping Lily."

Collins looked furious.

"Mr. Whitmore, do not enter the property."

"I won't."

"Then tell us."

Arthur took a breath.

"The lower cellar has a reinforced inner door. It can be locked from the outside."

My heart pounded.

"Why do you know that?"

He hesitated.

Then said:

"Because I paid to have it installed."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Collins spoke.

"Mr. Whitmore, step away from the property and remain with the officers."

Dad's voice broke.

"Sarah, there's something you need to know."

"What?"

"The old room has two exits."

I looked at the map.

"Two?"

Arthur continued.

"The first is through the fireplace. The second leads into the boathouse."

I froze.

The route I'd identified.

Collins nodded.

"Continue."

"The boathouse door has a mechanical release behind the pump cabinet."

I looked at Dad.

Even over the radio, I could hear him trembling.

"And?"

A long pause.

Then Arthur said:

"I had that door installed for Evelyn."

My mother went still.

"What?"

Dad's voice cracked.

"Eleven years ago, Gideon said we needed somewhere to keep her temporarily while he arranged the medical transfer."

I felt sick.

My father had helped build the place where my mother was held before they moved her.

He hadn't known what Gideon would do afterward.

But he'd built it.

I stared at the radio.

"Dad."

He stopped.

"Daniel?"

"Why didn't you tell us?"

His breathing became uneven.

"Because I was ashamed."

I closed my eyes.

Eleven years.

Twenty million dollars.

A stranger buried under my mother's name.

Claire recaptured.

And now, finally, my father was telling the truth even when it made him look worse.

I swallowed.

"Tell Collins everything you know."

He nodded audibly.

"I will."

Then another voice came over the radio.

An officer.

"Detective, we've made contact with the suspect."

My heart stopped.

"Where?"

"Lower cellar."

A pause.

"Adult male. Armed."

Gideon.

Collins spoke calmly.

"Do you have visual on the child?"

"Negative."

My pulse pounded.

Then the officer continued.

"Suspect has a hostage."

I stared.

"Who?"

A pause.

"Adult female."

Vanessa.

Collins looked toward me.

I felt sick.

Gideon was holding my wife.

Lily was somewhere else.

Then an officer shouted over the radio.

"Movement at the boathouse!"

I turned toward Collins.

She pressed the button.

"Identify!"

A pause.

Then:

"Small female child. Yellow clothing. Moving toward the dock."

I stopped breathing.

Lily.

She'd escaped.

I looked at the map.

The dock extended sixty feet into deep water.

It was old.

Partially rotten.

My stomach dropped.

"Get her away from the dock!"

Collins was already shouting the same thing.

Then the radio crackled.

A new voice.

Sharp.

Panicked.

"Child in the water!"

My knees went weak.

For one second, I couldn't hear anything.

Then the officer spoke again.

"Rescue personnel moving!"

I grabbed the table to stay upright.

My mother began praying.

And somewhere inside that terrible night, I heard myself whisper the same thing over and over.

"Please."

I closed my eyes.

"Not her."

Not Lily.

Not my little girl.

Not the only person in my life who had never lied to me.

Then the radio crackled again.

A voice shouted:

"We have her!"

I opened my eyes.

"Is she breathing?"

A pause.

Too long.

Far too long.

Then:

"Child conscious. Breathing. Being moved to medical personnel."

I sank to my knees.

I covered my face.

And cried.

Not quietly.

Not with dignity.

I cried like a father who had come within seconds of losing the only thing that mattered.

My mother knelt beside me.

She held me.

And for a moment, I was her little boy again.

Then Detective Collins's radio sounded.

"Suspect Rusk in custody."

I looked up.

Vanessa had been rescued.

Gideon had been arrested.

Lily was alive.

It should've been the end.

But then another message arrived on my phone.

From an unknown number.

ASK ARTHUR WHAT HE DID WITH THE FIRST COPY OF REBECCA'S RECORDING.

I stared at it.

The sender wasn't Gideon.

The message had been sent after his arrest.

I looked toward my mother.

She was watching me.

And I realized there was still someone outside that house who knew the entire story.

Someone who had waited until Gideon was captured to speak.

Someone who didn't want money.

May you like

They wanted the truth.

And the truth still had one more victim.
