Chapter 15 - ST. AGNES

St. Agnes Children’s Home had closed fifteen years earlier.

The building still stood in Queens.

Boarded windows.

Faded brick.

A rusted playground behind a chain-link fence.

Elena remembered it immediately.

She and Daniel had spent eleven days there after their mother died.

Eleven days before they were separated.

On Elena’s eighth birthday, a volunteer had brought a chocolate cake.

Daniel had tried to carry it.

He dropped the entire thing down a staircase.

Elena had cried.

Daniel had stolen two cupcakes from the kitchen to replace it.

It was one of the last happy memories they shared.

“The staircase.”

Elena stood inside the abandoned building with Daniel, Lorenzo, Matteo, and two investigators.

Dust covered the floor.

Their flashlights moved across peeling walls.

Daniel remembered too.

“Seven steps.”

Elena looked at him.

“The lion climbed seven steps.”

The old story.

Their mother had encoded this place years before they understood why.

They found the staircase.

Seven steps led to a small landing.

Three metal stars remained attached to the wall.

Elena’s heart pounded.

“Three stars.”

Daniel touched the wall beneath them.

Hollow.

Matteo found a loose panel.

Behind it sat a small metal box.

No elaborate safe.

No dramatic lock.

Just a lunchbox wrapped in plastic.

Elena laughed through tears.

“My mother hid twenty years of evidence inside a wall at a foster home.”

Daniel smiled.

“She knew nobody fixed anything here.”

That joke hurt because it was true.

Inside the box were microcassettes.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one sealed envelope labeled:

FOR LORENZO MORETTI.

Lorenzo opened it.

The letter was from Maria.

You don’t know me yet.

Maybe you never will.

But Lucia believes you are different from your father.

I hope she is right.

If you inherit his company, you will inherit enemies disguised as advisers.

The most dangerous will be the ones who tell you they are protecting your legacy.

Your legacy should not be money.

It should be what you choose to stop.

Lorenzo read the sentence again.

Elena watched him.

That line landed differently.

He continued.

Evelyn Crane created the Crown network before Vittorio understood its full reach.

She made herself necessary.

She encouraged his worst instincts.

She created hidden accounts he could not control without her.

Gabriel helped her at first.

Anthony enforced decisions.

Neither is innocent.

But neither is the architect.

If Lucia survives long enough to show you this, listen to her.

If she does not, protect her child from Evelyn.

Lorenzo’s hands tightened.

At the bottom was another note.

My children are Daniel and Elena Reyes.

If they are ever in danger because of what I found, help them.

Not because you owe me.

Because children should never inherit the punishments of adults.

Elena looked away.

Her mother had written to Lorenzo before Elena even knew he existed.

Daniel opened another folder.

“Here.”

Photographs.

Evelyn meeting bankers.

Evelyn meeting agency directors.

Evelyn beside Vittorio.

Evelyn beside Gabriel.

Then one photograph surprised them all.

Evelyn beside a much younger Matteo.

Matteo stared.

“I was twenty-two.”

“Where?” Lorenzo asked.

“Training academy.”

Elena looked at him.

“She recruited you?”

“No.”

Matteo frowned.

“My first private security position came through a scholarship fund.”

“Which fund?”

He already knew.

“Horizon.”

Evelyn had placed people everywhere.

Even around Lorenzo.

Not necessarily because they were loyal to her.

Because she liked owning the road people traveled.

A phone rang.

Daniel looked at his.

Unknown number.

He answered on speaker.

Evelyn Crane’s voice filled the abandoned room.

“Beautiful place, isn’t it?”

Everyone froze.

Elena looked toward the broken windows.

She could see no one.

Evelyn continued.

“Maria always did enjoy symbolism.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

“My records.”

“They aren’t yours.”

“They became mine the moment Maria stole them.”

Elena’s voice hardened.

“You mean copied them.”

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Elena Reyes.”

The sound made Elena’s skin crawl.

“I wondered what you would be like.”

“You sent men to my home.”

“I sent men to observe you.”

“You tried to take Sofia.”

“No.”

Everyone became still.

Evelyn continued.

“That was Gabriel’s mistake.”

Gabriel was not with them.

He had stayed at the townhouse with Sofia.

Lorenzo frowned.

“Gabriel admitted involvement.”

“In many things.”

Evelyn sounded amused.

“But not Sofia.”

Lorenzo looked at Matteo.

Another lie?

Another layer?

Evelyn continued.

“Anthony took Sofia.”

“On your order?”

“No.”

“Then whose?”

A pause.

“Ask Gabriel why he suddenly became interested in protecting children after twenty years.”

The call ended.

Daniel cursed under his breath.

Elena looked at Lorenzo.

“She’s trying to divide us.”

“Yes.”

“But that doesn’t mean every word is false.”

“No.”

Matteo checked his phone.

Then went pale.

“Call the townhouse.”

Lorenzo already was.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Matteo called security.

One guard answered.

His voice was frantic.

Lorenzo’s face changed.

“What happened?”

He listened.

Then looked at Elena.

“Gabriel is gone.”

“What about Sofia?”

Lorenzo did not answer.

May you like

Elena already knew.

Gabriel had taken her.
