Chapter 13 - What Was Hidden Inside the Rabbit

I didn't touch the rabbit until Clara arrived.

That was one of the hardest decisions I'd ever made.

The toy was only a few feet away.

Emily had fallen asleep with it tucked beneath her arm.

I could have lifted the yellow ribbon.

Examined the crooked stitches.

Searched for whatever Daniel had hidden inside.

But I remembered what Dr. Kim told me.

For Emily, the rabbit wasn't just a toy.

It was a connection to the people she'd believed were gone.

It was a piece of safety she had finally recovered.

I wouldn't take that away without preparing her.

Not even to find the evidence that could destroy the men who had hurt her.

Clara arrived shortly after dawn.

Daniel was recovering at the hospital under protection.

Hayes was with him.

I met Clara outside Emily's room.

“Tell me how you got the rabbit.”

She looked down.

“I found it six weeks ago.”

“Where?”

“At a charity warehouse in Bridgeport.”

I frowned.

“A warehouse?”

“Thomas's old storage unit was cleared after the company stopped paying for it.”

My heart tightened.

“His company?”

“A small private-security contractor registered under a different name.”

“How did you know where to look?”

“Daniel's email.”

She swallowed.

“He sent me the storage-unit number and a name connected to the account.”

I stared at her.

“Why didn't you tell me that before?”

“I didn't understand how important it was.”

She looked toward Emily's door.

“I thought the rabbit was just something she loved.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“When I found it, I knew I had to bring it back.”

I was quiet for a moment.

Then I asked, “How did you survive those two years?”

Clara lowered her eyes.

“Not very well.”

“Where did you live?”

“Shelters when I could.”

“And otherwise?”

She gave a small, exhausted shrug.

“Wherever nobody made me leave.”

I looked at her torn coat.

Her thin gloves.

The scar beside her ear.

For two years, I had sat inside a mansion worth more than most people earned in ten lifetimes.

And the woman who had nearly died saving my daughter had been sleeping outside.

The thought made me physically ill.

“Clara.”

She looked at me.

“I owe you more than I can ever repay.”

Her expression hardened.

“Don't.”

I blinked.

“Don't what?”

“Don't make this about money.”

I swallowed.

“That wasn't—”

“I know you mean well.”

She looked toward the bedroom.

“But I didn't come back for a reward.”

“Then what do you want?”

Her eyes filled.

“I want Emily to stop being afraid.”

I looked down.

Clara continued.

“And I want Daniel to be able to sleep without waking up screaming.”

My throat tightened.

“And I want the people who did this to stop hurting anyone else.”

I nodded.

“Then we want the same thing.”

She studied me.

For the first time, I thought I saw a little trust in her eyes.

“Maybe we do.”

We waited until Emily woke.

Dr. Kim joined us.

She explained to Emily that some adults wanted to check something inside the rabbit, but that Emily could decide whether she wanted to help.

Emily listened.

She held the toy tightly.

Then looked at Clara.

“Fix?”

Clara smiled.

“We'll be careful.”

Emily looked at me.

“Bunny okay?”

I swallowed.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

She thought about that.

Then handed Clara the rabbit.

I nearly cried.

Not because the evidence was finally within reach.

But because my daughter had trusted us with something precious.

Clara gently untied the yellow ribbon.

A forensic specialist examined the stitches.

With Emily's permission and Dr. Kim's guidance, the specialist carefully opened a small section of the repaired ear.

Inside the stuffing was a tiny plastic packet.

Sealed.

Folded.

Almost invisible.

The specialist removed it with tweezers.

Inside was a microSD card.

I stopped breathing.

Hayes photographed the packet and documented its recovery.

Then the specialist resealed the ear.

Clara tied the ribbon back around the rabbit's neck.

Emily reached for it immediately.

She hugged it.

Then looked at the empty packet.

“Secret.”

Everybody froze.

I knelt beside her.

“You knew there was something inside?”

She nodded.

I didn't ask anything else.

But Emily leaned toward me.

“Daniel said.”

My eyes filled.

“What did Daniel say, sweetheart?”

She looked at Clara.

Then whispered, “Keep safe.”

My heart broke.

For two years, my daughter had carried the memory of a secret without knowing whether telling anyone would put her in danger.

No wonder she had been afraid.

No wonder she had held her hands as though she were still rubbing the rabbit's missing ear.

Clara knelt beside her.

“You did keep it safe, Little Bird.”

Emily looked at her.

Then asked, “Daniel home?”

Clara began crying.

“Soon, sweetheart.”

Emily touched her face.

“Don't cry.”

Clara pulled her gently into a hug.

“I'll try.”

I turned away before they saw my tears.

It took the forensic team several hours to examine the card.

The first files were damaged.

Several wouldn't open.

But enough remained.

There were spreadsheets.

Internal authorization records.

Transaction logs.

Copies of messages.

And seven video files.

Most of the footage came from the lake cottage's security system.

The last recording had sound.

I watched it in a conference room with Hayes, Samuel, and two investigators.

The video began at 3:17 p.m.

October seventeenth.

Adrian Vale stood near the piano, holding a folder.

Daniel Bennett was beside him.

Victoria stood near the doorway.

Thomas Mercer faced them.

Adrian sounded angry.

“You can't make thirty-two million dollars disappear and expect nobody to notice.”

Thomas replied calmly.

“You're making this difficult.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Richard's setting Jonathan up.”

Victoria looked terrified.

“You promised me this wouldn't involve my husband.”

Thomas turned toward her.

“Your father knows what he's doing.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Your father and Richard are stealing from him.”

Victoria stepped back.

“Stop.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Victoria, you need to tell Jonathan.”

She shook her head.

“I can't.”

“Then I will.”

Thomas moved toward Adrian.

The video became chaotic.

A chair fell.

Daniel shouted.

Someone struck the wall.

Then a sound came from off-camera.

A little girl's voice.

“Clara?”

I stopped breathing.

Emily.

She stood in the doorway holding her blue rabbit.

Victoria turned.

Her face changed instantly.

“Emily?”

The little girl looked confused.

“Mommy?”

Adrian stepped back.

Thomas looked toward the hallway.

And then another voice came through his radio.

Richard Sloane.

I recognized it immediately.

“Thomas, what's happening?”

Thomas lifted the radio.

“We have a problem.”

Richard sounded irritated.

“What kind?”

“The child is here.”

A long pause followed.

Then Richard said, “Get her out.”

Thomas looked toward Emily.

Adrian moved in front of her.

“Don't touch that little girl.”

Richard's voice sharpened.

“Adrian, you have no idea what you're doing.”

Adrian shouted toward the radio.

“Richard, it's over.”

Another pause.

Then Richard said something that made the entire room go silent.

“If Jonathan finds out, we're all finished.”

Thomas looked toward Victoria.

“What do you want me to do?”

Richard answered.

“Destroy the files.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You're not getting them.”

The video showed him reaching into his pocket.

Then he looked toward the blue rabbit.

I understood what happened next.

He had already hidden the card.

Richard continued speaking.

“Thomas, listen to me carefully.”

The sound crackled.

“I don't want witnesses telling Jonathan what happened here.”

Thomas glanced at Emily.

Victoria moved in front of her daughter.

“Don't you dare.”

Richard spoke again.

“Then make sure the child doesn't remember.”

I felt every muscle in my body lock.

The next few minutes showed Thomas trying to retrieve the evidence.

Daniel resisting.

Adrian attempting to intervene.

Victoria screaming at Thomas to stop.

And then Thomas leaving through the rear entrance.

The camera continued recording.

For several seconds, the room was still.

Then smoke began rising beneath the door.

Adrian rushed toward it.

Daniel lifted Emily.

Clara appeared in the hallway.

The video ended when the heat damaged the camera.

I sat motionless.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Hayes turned to me.

“Jonathan.”

I couldn't answer.

She gently placed a hand on the table.

“We have him.”

I looked at her.

“Richard?”

“We have evidence linking him directly to the plan and to the threats made that day.”

I stared at the frozen screen.

My best friend.

My daughter's godfather.

The man who stood beside me at her christening.

The man who bought her a little silver bracelet on her first birthday.

He had known she was inside that cottage.

And he had chosen money.

Power.

Control.

Over her life.

“Where is he?” I whispered.

Hayes shook her head.

“We're searching.”

I looked at her.

“Find him.”

“We will.”

I stood.

“And Edward?”

“His role is also under investigation.”

I stared at the screen one last time.

The video was frozen on a single frame.

Victoria stood between Thomas and Emily.

Her arms were spread.

For the first time, I saw exactly what my wife had done.

She had tried to protect our daughter.

But afterward, she had protected the people who hurt her.

And the second decision had lasted two years.

I walked out of the room.

My phone vibrated.

A text from an unknown number.

YOU HAVE THE CARD.

My heart stopped.

Another message appeared.

I HAVE SOMETHING YOU WANT MORE.

A photograph loaded.

It showed a familiar black SUV parked outside a small building.

I recognized the building immediately.

Emily's temporary safe residence.

Then a final message appeared.

May you like

COME ALONE, JONATHAN.

OR YOUR DAUGHTER LOSES MORE THAN HER VOICE.
