Chapter 16 - The Mother They Underestimated

I refused to leave the operations center.

Not when the sun went down.

Not when Mrs. Alvarez arrived with food.

Not when Olivia told me I needed rest.

My daughter was missing.

Daniel was somewhere near a burning building.

And the man responsible for everything was still sitting in a corporate office.

I wasn't going home.

Not without answers.

At 6:12 p.m., Agent Torres returned.

"The man found in the corridor wasn't Daniel."

My knees almost buckled.

"Then who?"

"A former facility employee. He's alive, but in critical condition."

I pressed a hand against my chest.

"And Daniel?"

"We still haven't located him."

Ethan reached for my hand.

"Mom?"

I turned.

He held Ava's stuffed rabbit against his chest.

"Remember what you said?"

"What, sweetheart?"

"That being scared doesn't mean you aren't brave."

My throat tightened.

"Yes."

He looked up at me.

"Then I think Ava's being brave right now."

I couldn't speak.

I knelt and hugged him.

For a long time, we stayed that way.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unfamiliar number.

SARAH. IT'S CALEB.

My entire body went still.

A second message appeared.

AVA IS WITH ME. SHE IS SAFE FOR NOW.

I nearly dropped the phone.

I immediately showed Agent Torres.

She signaled another officer.

"Keep him talking."

I typed with shaking hands.

LET ME SPEAK TO HER.

A minute passed.

Then two.

Finally, the phone rang.

I answered.

"Caleb?"

"Sarah."

His voice was hoarse.

I heard a child crying in the background.

"Ava?"

"Mommy?"

My knees gave way.

I sat on the floor.

"Ava, baby, it's Mommy."

"Mommy, I want to go home."

"I know, sweetheart."

"Are you coming?"

"Yes."

Tears streamed down my face.

"I'm coming."

Caleb returned to the phone.

"I took her from Elise."

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Caleb, don't do this."

"Richard has people everywhere."

"Then let the police protect you."

He laughed bitterly.

"You think I'm worth protecting?"

I closed my eyes.

"You're holding our daughter."

Silence.

Then he whispered.

"I know."

I heard him struggling to breathe.

"Caleb, are you hurt?"

"Yeah."

My stomach tightened.

"How badly?"

"Bad enough."

I looked toward Torres.

She was already coordinating the trace.

"Tell me where you are."

Caleb began crying.

I had never heard him cry before.

Not during our marriage.

Not when we lost our house.

Not when he walked away from his children.

"I'm sorry, Sarah."

I swallowed.

"Don't."

"I ruined everything."

"Caleb, listen to me."

"I thought Richard would pay me enough to get out of debt."

My eyes filled with anger.

"You sold us out."

"I know."

"You let strangers follow your children."

"I know."

"You helped them take Ava."

His breathing became ragged.

"I thought he'd just make you sign the trust papers."

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I forced myself to remain calm.

"Caleb, you can apologize later."

A pause.

"Just bring our daughter home."

He was silent for a long moment.

Then he said, "There's something else."

"What?"

"The music box."

My heart stopped.

"Do you have it?"

"No."

"Then why are you telling me?"

"Because I saw Richard open it."

I gripped the phone.

"What was inside?"

"A storage device."

"The recordings?"

"Yes."

My breath caught.

"Did you see what was on it?"

"Enough."

He paused.

"Richard ordered the fire that killed your father."

I closed my eyes.

"And?"

"Victor arranged the payments."

My stomach twisted.

"Was Edward involved?"

Caleb hesitated.

"Richard made it look like Edward approved everything."

I remembered the forged video of Daniel.

The false divorce papers.

The altered corporate records.

The pattern suddenly became clear.

Richard didn't simply commit crimes.

He manufactured evidence that made other people responsible.

"Caleb, can you prove that?"

"There's a copy."

"Where?"

He took a breath.

"Your father's notebook has a code written inside the back cover."

I looked toward Olivia.

She immediately reached for the notebook.

Caleb continued.

"The code opens an encrypted archive attached to the Reed patent files."

Olivia flipped through the pages.

At the back, beneath a handwritten equation, were sixteen characters.

Letters.

Numbers.

Symbols.

I stared at them.

My father had left a second trail.

One Richard had never found.

"Caleb."

"Yeah?"

"Where is Ava?"

He began breathing harder.

"Old roadside diner."

"Which one?"

"Desert Star."

I looked toward Torres.

She nodded.

Officers were moving.

"Stay there," I whispered.

"I can't."

"Caleb—"

"They found me."

A vehicle engine roared in the background.

Ava screamed.

I jumped.

"CALEB!"

He shouted something.

The phone hit the ground.

Footsteps.

A door slamming.

Then the line went dead.

Agent Torres was already giving orders.

I stood frozen.

I couldn't lose her again.

Not now.

Not when I'd heard her voice.

Olivia grabbed my arm.

"Sarah, look at me."

I turned.

She held up my father's notebook.

"We have the code."

I stared at it.

"And?"

"We may finally have the evidence."

I looked toward the screen where investigators were monitoring vehicle locations.

"Then use it."

Olivia hesitated.

"Sarah, the archive may contain confidential corporate information."

I looked at her.

"My daughter has been kidnapped."

My voice grew stronger.

"My father was killed."

"My husband is missing."

I took the notebook from her hands.

"And the men responsible have spent fourteen years hiding behind lawyers and bank accounts."

I set it on the table.

"Open it."

Two hours later, a digital forensic specialist successfully accessed the archive.

The files contained engineering test results.

Payment records.

Encrypted correspondence.

And a video deposition my father had recorded days before his death.

I watched him appear on the screen.

He looked younger than I remembered.

Tired.

Worried.

But determined.

"My name is Patrick Reed," he began.

"I am recording this because I believe my life may be in danger."

My chest tightened.

He continued.

"I have discovered deliberate manipulation of safety data related to the Meridian storage system."

He lifted a folder.

"Richard Hayes authorized the substitutions."

Then he displayed copies of internal correspondence.

"Victor Sloan facilitated payments to conceal the changes."

My father paused.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If this recording is being viewed because something happened to me, I want my daughter Sarah to know one thing."

I covered my mouth.

He smiled sadly.

"Sweetheart, I didn't stop fighting because I forgot about you."

Tears streamed down my face.

"I kept fighting because I wanted you to grow up in a world where powerful people couldn't hurt others and simply walk away."

His voice cracked.

"I love you."

I bent over the table and sobbed.

For fourteen years, I had believed my father died because of a tragic accident.

Now I knew he had died trying to protect other families.

And he had left me the truth.

Agent Torres quietly stepped beside me.

"Sarah, this is significant evidence."

I wiped my face.

"Then let's finish what he started."

At that moment, an officer entered.

"Agent Torres."

She turned.

"We located Ava."

I stopped breathing.

"Where?"

"At the Desert Star diner."

"Is she alive?"

The officer nodded.

"Yes."

I collapsed into Olivia's arms.

But before I could ask anything else, the officer added:

"There's a man with her."

My heart hammered.

"Caleb?"

The officer shook his head.

"No."

May you like

He looked toward Agent Torres.

"It's Daniel Hayes."
