Chapter 13 - THE SHOT

The gunshot hadn't come from Vivian.

An officer had fired at a charging stray dog that appeared from behind a fence.

He missed.

The dog ran.

Vivian kept running too.

For eight more minutes.

Then police found her hiding beneath a neighbor's deck.

Barefoot.

Bleeding from one knee.

Still insisting she had done nothing wrong.

“I came to apologize.”

Officer Ramirez stared at the broken window.

“You apologize with burglary now?”

“I was scared for Lily.”

“You violated a restraining order.”

“Ethan is poisoning her against me.”

“You cut your monitor.”

“It malfunctioned.”

“You broke a window.”

“No one answered.”

Ramirez almost laughed.

Vivian pointed toward Ethan.

“He's dangerous.”

Lily flinched.

Ethan felt it.

That was Vivian's last weapon.

Not the chain.

Not the lies.

Fear.

She had trained Lily to connect conflict with danger.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Take her away.”

Vivian's eyes locked on him.

“This is your fault.”

He said nothing.

“You brought me into that house.”

Nothing.

“You left me with her.”

Nothing.

“You ignored every problem.”

That one landed.

Vivian saw it.

Her mouth curved.

“There he is.”

Ethan looked at her.

“I did ignore things.”

Rachel turned toward him.

Vivian's smile widened.

“I worked too much. I trusted you when I should've listened to my daughter. I explained away things that scared her because explanations were easier than questions.”

Vivian blinked.

Ethan stepped closer, staying behind the police line.

“That is on me.”

Her smile disappeared.

“But what you did is on you.”

“You made me miserable.”

“I didn't make you terrorize a child.”

“She hated me!”

“She was four.”

“She ruined everything!”

“She was four!”

The entire street seemed to hear him.

Vivian stared at Lily.

That was her mistake.

Lily saw her face.

Saw the hatred.

And for the first time, she didn't hide.

She stood beside Ethan.

Small.

Shaking.

But standing.

Vivian said, “Lily, tell them.”

Lily gripped Ethan's hand.

“Tell them what?”

“That Daddy yells.”

Lily nodded.

“Sometimes.”

Vivian looked triumphant.

“See?”

Then Lily added:

“But Daddy says sorry.”

Vivian's expression changed.

“And Daddy doesn't lock me downstairs.”

Silence.

“And Daddy doesn't say Mommy didn't love me.”

Vivian went pale.

“And Daddy didn't get the chain.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Rachel started crying.

Officer Ramirez turned Vivian toward the patrol car.

She resisted.

“No! She's confused!”

Lily shouted after her.

“No, I'm not!”

Vivian stopped.

Everyone did.

Lily was crying now.

But her voice was loud.

“You told me nobody would believe me.”

Vivian stared.

Lily wiped her face.

“Daddy believed the camera.”

The officers put Vivian into the car.

She disappeared behind dark glass.

Ethan knelt beside Lily.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He appreciated the answer.

“Me neither.”

She wrapped her arms around him.

“Can we go home?”

He hesitated.

Their house was still full of evidence.

Bad memories.

A basement door.

A marble floor.

“We will.”

“When?”

“When you're ready.”

Lily thought.

Then whispered:

“I don't want the house to belong to Vivian.”

Ethan looked at her.

Four years old.

Terrified.

And somehow braver than every adult around her.

“Then it won't.”

But the next morning, Ethan learned that taking back the house would be easier than taking back Lily's trust.

Because during her forensic interview, Lily told the counselor one final secret.

May you like

A secret about Ethan himself.
